How to Display Your Collection

Over the years that I have been in the interior decorating business, one of the biggest problems I have encountered with clients is dealing with collections. Often, I have seen people scatter things all over their house or never display their collections, keeping everything in boxes. This week’s decorating article will focus on how you can display those loved items.

Small Items

If you have a collection of thimbles, small figurines, or tea cups, consider placing them in a divided case, either in a table or wall-mounted format, to create an interesting visual. Tips for displaying small item collections:

  1. Search on Etsy for the perfectly sized display case for your items.
  2. Display the items at eye level.
  3. Use glass vases or apothecary jars to display shells, rocks, and natural elements of varying heights and shapes.

Medium to Large Items

Grouping your items in a display cabinet or case is another way to display your things. There are wall-mounted and corner cabinets that do not require significant space and allow you to keep the items in a closed environment to minimize dusting.

Shelves, Shadowboxes, and Gallery Walls

There are various types of floating shelves that you can use to create your grouping at your local home store or online. Shadowboxes offer a fabulous way to display many things of various sizes. Depending on the size of your collection will depend on the number of boxes you will need.

Create a gallery wall by mixing framed pieces with non-framed items. Items may be attached directly to the wall by using 3M fixatives. Consider using Disc hangers instead of wired plate holders if you hang plates. There are some general rules to follow when creating a gallery wall, and I highly recommend setting everything on the floor in the arrangement first before hanging on your wall; always start with the center focal point.

Groupings

Consider grouping items on a flat surface if you have a collection of larger items such as model cars, bobbleheads, or sports trophies. You can frame these items on a large tray or table runner on a buffet or side table. If you have an extensive collection of playbills, vinyl records, or concert posters, frame them in similarly colored frames and display them in one room to maximize visual interest.
