Tips on Choosing a Frame

Choosing the right frame is essential to enhance the aesthetics of artwork in a room. There are many considerations before you make your choice.

5 Considerations to help you choose the perfect frame:

  1. Frame Material
Choose a frame material that you like that fits the room’s style. For example, metal frames offer a sleek style that works well in a modern or contemporary room. Many wood frame styles are available, ranging from ornate to simple, painted, or stained.
  2. Size and Proportion
Over the years, a common issue I have seen is that clients need help choosing the right size or frame proportion for where they want to hang it. The frame’s size needs to be balanced relative to the size of the piece. The goal is for the frame not to overwhelm or understate the art. Also, the location, where the item will hang, and available space play a role. For example, hanging a small, framed piece over a couch may not be pleasing to the eye as it is out of balance with the scale of the couch in the room.
  3. Grouping
Group your pieces with the same or similar color frame when placed in the same room. Personally, I gravitate to neutral mat colors such as white, cream, or beige. Look at the location where you plan to hang your grouping. You will want the collection to be 2/3 the couch or side table length.
  4. Frame with Glass or Acrylic
If it is a sentimental or valuable piece, use archival or conservation-frame materials to protect it; often, you will see the term museum-grade. Choose a glass or acrylic with UV protection and anti-glare options, depending on the piece.
  5. Framing Options
A professional framer can offer expert guidance to make the best choice to fit the artwork and your preferences. However, consider a ready-made frame you can pick up or order for a quick, budget-friendly option. Alternatively, use an online framer that will walk you through the steps.
