Have you noticed that mid-century decorating elements are popping up in home decorating stores everywhere? Do you like the look of mid-century décor or mid-century modern?
Let’s clarify what mid-century décor refers to:
Mid-century modern is an architectural, interior, product and graphic design that generally describes mid-20th century developments in modern design, architecture and urban development from roughly 1933 to 1965. (Wikipedia)
According to West Elm’s VP of Product Design, Jonathan Orr, mid-century design “continues to evolve into new finishes and colors, and being remixed with other periods.†(Covit, Dana. “Is Midcentury Modernism Over.” MyDomaine.) It is because of this mix that we don’t get bored with the look and find new ways to use period pieces in our home decorating.
Design elements attributed to the mid-century decorating style include natural items, open and airy rooms, clean lines, and simple decorations. This style began showing up in residential American homes and suburbs post WWII. During this time you could see the following decorating items:
- A starburst mirror reflecting the changes in the space-age during the 50s-60s.
- Tulip tables and chairs.
- Atomic Clocks.
- New materials such as resin, plastic, and fiberglass.
- Globe shaped lighting.
- New colors: citrus orange and turquoise.
