How to Choose an Outdoor Rug

The best way to create an instant conversation area outdoor is to tie it together with an outdoor rug. A rug creates a cozy feel and can add that pop of color or pattern that you can blend with pillows and accessories. How do you choose the right outdoor rug?

An outdoor rug needs to handle the elements:  rain, sun, humidity. Therefore, you want to be sure that the carpet you choose will perform the way you want. Choose a flatweave rug that is designed to have minimal shedding and can handle outdoor wear. You want a stain and UV resistant material that drains well. Keep in mind, if you are adding a rug to a wood or composite deck, you do not want to use one with a rubber or latex backing as they may break down over time and affect your decking material. If you experience harsh winters, the best way to maintain your rug and deck is to roll it up (when completely dry) and store.

Choose rugs that are made of synthetic materials such as polypropylene or recycled plastics. Rugs made of natural fibers will retain moisture, and you may have issues with mold and mildew. If a rug is labeled, indoor / outdoor do not assume that it will be fine for your needs. Always look at the detailed specifications of what the rug is made of to ensure that it is what you want.

Consider adding a rug pad. When purchasing, match the pad to the rug size. The pad, because of its waffled pattern, allows the air to circulate, moisture to drain quickly, therefore, keeping your rug dry and avoid long-term mold issues.

The same rules of furniture placement apply outside as they do inside your house. You want to create the proper balance with your conversation area. For guidance on how to purchase the correct sized rug and how to place it, click here for tips from Overstock.
