shutterstock_241432237January is a great month here on the east coast as it allows us time to think about all the decorating projects we want to complete in this New Year.  It is also an exceptional month to purchase bedding and linens as the best White Sales you will find are available now according to Consumer Reports.  Let’s look at the design trends that you may want to consider in your planning stage for home decorating in 2015.

Let’s start with the color trends in 2015.  On the runway, we saw color shades coming back reminiscent of the 60s; such as, olive and orange so you will be seeing these colors available in decorating items.  As reported in last week’s post we, know that Pantone picked Marsala 18-1438 as their color of the year, Sherwin-Williams selected Coral Reef SW 6606, and Benjamin Moore chose Guilford Green HC-116.  All of this will translate into some unusual combinations at your favorite home product store, and I can’t wait to go shopping!

According to the Zillow Digs design team, click here for their press release, the top five design trends for 2015 are:

  1. Gold fixtures
  2. Cowhide
  3. Wallpaper
  4. Blue Accent Colors
  5. Modern to mid-century modern elements

With these great design trends in mind and some splendid ideas on your part, what’s the next step?

Put your plan on paper.  Too often when working with clients I find that they don’t know where to start with a project or how to wrap their mind around the steps.  Go through the process and think about what you want to accomplish in your project or renovation and put these details in writing.  Too often people will brain storm on ideas and desires, and the thoughts are never written down and forgotten or not organized properly.  Here is a recommended list of steps to follow before you embark on a new and sizeable project:

  • Detail the project goal.
  • Define your desired style.
  • Describe a color scheme:  what colors do you like and want to use in your project.
  • Establish what you have to work with such as, artwork or furniture.  Do you have any inspirational pieces of furniture, or a lovely piece of art that you would like to showcase in this new project?  I find if you can hone your vision to the one thing you love the rest of the project pieces can easily be defined.
