It’s that time of year on the East Coast where we hunker down and brace ourselves for the “real” winter, or we head south! To help inspire you and get your creative home decorating ideas flowing I wanted to offer some great home decorating things to do in the month of January.
Organize
Don’t you love those photos of organized homes where they depict three items neatly hung on hooks? They portray this look as if we too could be this organized. The issue is that we have a lot more than three items to worry about, and that is really at the core of what needs to be addressed. To organize a space, you first have to remove things. Too often this is a daunting task. My suggestion is to take one issue area that you are struggling with, may it be your paperwork, or toys, or shoes. As Marie Kondo says in her book, “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up†tidy by category. Solve the organization issues category by category, in this way; you are ultimately organizing one group of things at a time. For further decluttering tips inspired by Kondo’s book, click here.
Brighten Your Surroundings
Though we are inspired to be cozy and warm during this time, we still have the opportunity to brighten our surroundings. Add plants to any room to bring a bright green, Pantone’s 2017 Color of the Year, and life to any space. If you are unsure what plants work in a low-light situation, click here for some tips from BHG.
If you have soft or muted light, you may want to update your bulbs and use an energy efficient LED white light bulb. For an in-depth lighting planning guide from HGTV, click here.
January is the Month of Linen Sales
You can go to any home store, and you will notice that all bedding, linens, and towels are on sale. It is an excellent time to replace a duvet or pick up a fresh set of towels for your bath. You can give a guest bathroom a mini-makeover by only adding a new throw rug and towels. Finish the look with a plant and your new look will be complete!
