3 Tips on Mixing Decorating Styles

Mixing decorating styles

I run into this question all the time in home redesign consultations, “How do I mix styles?” If you have older furniture or furniture that you inherited and want to add a fresh look to a room, and mix styles, you can! Follow these three tips:

1. Mix styles by using the same color family.

In this example, a traditional table is mixed with modern white chairs, a white shelving unit, and white accessories to add pops of white to the room.

2. Match the size and shape of items, not the style.

In this example, the side chairs are different in style, share the same color hue and size.

3. Balance and distribute styles so that they appear equally weighted.

This little bedroom shows differing side tables and artwork, however, they are balanced in overall weight.

Keep in mind that you can always bring fresh life to a wood piece that you may not like with paint. Learn how I transformed my bedroom furniture in How to Transform Old Furniture. If you inherited a mahogany dining set, don’t get rid of it, paint it the color you want and pick a fresh, modern fabric for the seat covers and you will be amazed at how much you love it.

If you need help with picking a color palette or breathing fresh life into an old room, give me a call 610.955.8202 or email to set up a consultation!
