Have you heard this term “hygge”? It is becoming more and more mainstream in America. The concept originates in Denmark and describes a way of life. It’s pronounced “hoo-ga” if you were wondering.
Nordic countries exemplify this way of life, and consistently top, The World Happiness Report for life satisfaction. So, what does it mean? Meik Wiking, CEO of the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen, states, “Hygge is about an atmosphere and an experience. It is about being with the people we love. A feeling of home. A feeling that we are safe.” In his book titled, “The Little Book of Hygge,†he recommends:
- Get comfortable and prioritize comforting textures.
- Be present at the moment not distracted by technology, take a break and relax.
- Use proper lighting, use candles.
- Build and connect relationships, invite friends over, create memories.
- Enjoy the simple pleasures of fresh tea, coffee, or the smell of a baked item.
How can you add Hygge to your decor?
- Simplify your decorating style. Remove clutter and surround yourself with only things that are peaceful to you and make you comfortable.
- Embrace natural items. A cozy natural (cotton, wool, silk, linen) thread throw, incorporate plants in your room, bring nature from outdoor indoors in found items, cuttings, rocks, etc.
- Decorate with and use candles. For information on the best way to burn a candle, click here.
- Create a hyggekrog. I love this concept! The theory is that everyone should have their cozy corner, comfortable and snug place. I offer five tips on setting up a comfortable reading area in my article titled, Color Me Cozy in 5 Easy Steps, check it out for details.
