I have found with clients over the years that the amount of space and organization of a laundry room greatly affects their attitude toward doing laundry. My decorating article this week focuses on a laundry room makeover! I have found the laundry room the most neglected area of a home yet most often used. If you have children, I’m sure you are doing laundry practically every day!

You can have fun with your laundry room makeover. The first step is the clean-up and deciding what is needed. If there are items not pertinent to managing your clothes my recommendation is to remove those items. How often has this room become the dumping zone of stuff? I have created a board on Pinterest for inspiration and product ideas for you to get a sense of how your laundry room could look, click here to view.

The size of your budget will determine how extensive your laundry room makeover will be. Often, a makeover can be accomplished by cleaning, organizing and creating a new laundry system for yourself by adding baskets or bins. The baskets can be for each person or category:  Whites, Darks, Delicates, Towels, and Sheets. Step back and look at your laundry room, are you efficiently using the space? Is your unwashed and washed laundry area organized? Shelves and wall-mounted drying racks can make a significant functional improvement to your space. Also, consider placing small items, such as socks, to mesh laundry bags to keep them together by to make the sorting process organized and efficient.

For organizing, consider adding a cabinet that can be inexpensively purchased from your local home store such as Lowes. Depending on your space and needs, a wall-mounted system that you can customize may be the right choice. For example, look at the shelving system from The Container Store to keep your space perfectly organized, click here to view options.

Though first and foremost, your primary concern is having a functioning and organized laundry room; that doesn’t mean the room has to be boring! Use a bold and cheerful paint color! If you have little wall space don’t overlook the ceiling – it could be a fun color! I also love the idea of adding artwork to your laundry room to make it feel pleasing to you.
