As we finish off the last couple of weeks of August, it is time for all parents of school-age kids to get their “school mode” caps on so the start of the school year begins smoothly and without aggravation and arguments. Having four kids has taught me a thing or two about this process. This article will focus on organization tips and ideas to help you be successful this school year!
If you do not have one already, I recommend having a command center, a designated place where you and your kids will put their school things, such as backpacks, and a place for important papers that need to be reviewed for upcoming school and sporting events. You do not have to give up style. I have put together an idea board on Pinterest to inspire you, click here to view.
First, decide what needs to be in the space and what tasks you want to be able to do in that space. Second, determine where you have space to develop your command center. Third, draw out your plan, label each item, and indicate where it should go. The drawing should include measurements of the allotted space and the included items.
Decorate
Now for the fun part! Create your shopping list! You do not have to use plastic bins to collect your belongings. Consider using any decorative stacking bin and add wheels! Be sure it is sturdy, such as a wooden box you decorated or a lovely wire basket. To help you add caster wheels to your box or bin, click here for instructions. I found a fabulous idea for adding wheels to wire baskets by using zip ties, for instructions click here. A decorated storage ottoman is another very good idea as it can double as a seat when your kids are getting on their shoes.
Plan the Hooks
The hooks on the pre-made hook bars you purchase are too close together. These hooks must be rugged and capable of holding weight since kids will pull things off them. You may wish to attach the hooks to a piece of wood trim and then attach that to the wall; for tips on this project, click here.
Where do the Papers Go
You can have a place for each child’s papers or have a centralized place for all outgoing and incoming documents. Whatever you think will have the most success is your best option. Remember, a system works when people follow it! If you have limited space, the idea of wall pockets or magazine racks is a great idea.
Setting up a system and explaining the expectations before school starts will ensure a smooth and happy first day of school!
