Once we are past the threat of nighttime frost in the northeast, it is a great time to get your outdoor pots and containers filled with beautiful plants for your deck or patio. Before you start, review the following information.
5 Tips for preparing your pots and containers:
1. Prepare your pots and plant containers
The material your containers are made of will determine the best cleaning method. The key is to avoid any residual salts or diseases. When starting out, choosing pots with adequate drainage or materials that can be easily drilled for drainage holes is important. 2. How much fill do you need?
Do you need soil for your containers? Click here for information on making your own potting soil, or review the various types of potting soil. Remember that proper drainage is essential. Use a piece of screen mesh at the bottom of your container to allow for drainage and prevent dirt from clogging the drainage holes. 3. Create your design and color combination
Create a plan for how many containers you will need, and consider the color(s) of the pots you already own if you plan to purchase additional ones. You will also want to consider the size and height of the containers.
Next, pick the plant colors you like and carry that palette throughout one area. Remember that you can mix a container with plants of varying heights and shades of green. Consider the color of the containers themselves when adding plants to them. Some people choose one color for the pots and carry that theme throughout an area.
4. Picking plants
Pick what you like and create a complementary theme that makes you happy! You will want to consider watering requirements; for example, mixing plants that require dry soil should not go with a plant that needs constant watering. Also, buy enough plants to fill the pot to get immediate joy. If it takes all summer to fill in, you won’t be happy with the sparseness of the pot. 5. Add decorative features to your design.
