When it is February, and the groundhog has determined there will be six more weeks of winter bring some plant life into your home décor to freshen up a room. I’m sure you’ve seen them, they seem to be popping up everywhere in home decorating stores, Succulents! They are excellent plants for indoor containers as they conserve moisture and add greenery to your surroundings. There are a few things you will want to know before you start.
Pick the right plants.
You will want to pick the right plants for your indoor environment. As some succulents require more sunlight than others, you may want to check in with your local nursery for advice. For a suggestion on the best ten plants for beginners, click here.
Choose the right container.
Creating a centerpiece or coffee table arrangement with a succulent garden creates a lovely focal point in a room. Use any decorative container you wish to capture the water runoff that will not leak. Use smaller containers with drainage holes that will sit inside the larger non-draining container. You can layer pebbles, sea glass, shells or any lovely item that can handle moisture in the outer container. If you choose to use a non-draining container, line the bottom with small gravel prior to filling with the soil mixture to prevent the plant from sitting in water.
Understand soil and water.
Fortunately, Miracle-Gro makes a mixture for Cactus, Palm & Citrus that is fast-drying and you can find it at any home store. According to the World of Succulents, you need to water your succulents once every two weeks. I would recommend if you purchase your plants at a Nursery to ask them this question for the succulents you buy. After watering, be sure to drain any excess water from the larger container to make sure you don’t have an accident on your coffee table!
