As many of you know my mom passed away in November at the incredible age of 92. She was the original redesigner! She had five daughters and lived on a tight budget and was always creating and changing our environment. She went to art and design school which was a great privilege in her day. She was an artist, designer, seamstress and a fabulous cook. She was one of the most creative people always thinking and creating in her mind the next “home project.”
I was fortunate to grow up around all this talent, and the majority of the art in our home was her original work. As the best story-teller around, she was full of life, funny and enjoyed a good laugh with friends and family.
As an innovator and trend-setter, you never knew what she was going to do! One day when I came home from school I found the entire kitchen walls covered in masking tape and newspapers. When I asked my mom what she was about to do she smiled and said she was tired of her refrigerator color and was about to spray paint it pink the new color of the year! She had seen it in a magazine, can you imagine? Everyone, particularly my dad, was surprised when they came home! To this day, we still remember the pink spray paint that seeped into all the cabinets all over the dishes and pans!
Another day I recall coming home from school, I had gotten a snack and headed into the den to watch a little TV (back in the days when you had five channels to choose from.) I could hear my mom yelling from another room asking me, “What do you think of the den?â€Â When I walked in I saw that while I was at school she had painted the den an exquisite orange red. She was ahead of her time as no one painted their walls red during this period!
I am grateful and forever blessed with all of the many talents that I had the opportunity to be influenced by and I can honestly say that my love for the interior redesign and home staging business can all be attributed to my very funny and creative mom! Always full of life, love and surprises – I miss you, mom!
Perhaps these stories have inspired you to take some chances in your home and tackle that project that maybe is a reach for you. It’s okay to take some risks, after all, there’s always a can of paint out there to cover it all up! Happy decorating!
