Recently, I have been looking for a new couch and decided it would be fun to do a decorating article on the topic of finding the right one. Walking into a furniture store can be overwhelming, and I would recommend doing some online shopping before visiting a store. A couch or sofa sets the tone for a room and can be a significant investment, and you will want to make the right choice. To help you, let’s review the three areas to consider before you head out shopping:
What is your desired style?
If you decide you want the couch to be a statement or a focal point in the room you will want something bold. Or you may choose a neutral-colored upholstery that could compliment any decorating style. Choosing leather is a great option for those of you with heavy traffic from kids or pets. If it is a piece you intend to keep for a while, choose a neutral fabric (think beige or gray tones) that can easily be changed by adding different pillows, throw, and accessories. I have often encountered situations where the homeowner wants a new couch but doesn’t want to stay in the same style as all the other furniture in the room. They want something new with a new look. You can mix pieces and make it work. The easiest way to pull a room together with different styled furniture is to pick one color or element (think metal, wicker, glass) and repeat it throughout the room. If you choose a color this can be used in pillows, throw, vases, curtains, lamps. Or you can decide to repeat a pattern, using the same fabric in multiple areas of the room. If you choose to purchase a couch with patterned fabric, often you can order additional fabric by the yard to have on hand for matching pillow or chair covers.
What size couch do you want?
Depending on how many people you want to seat, and the size of your room will dictate the couch size. A standard 3-seat sofa is 35″ deep and 84″ wide; however, there are very large sectionals that come in varying sizes. Take measurements of the space where you want to place the new couch as well as your doorways and hallways to get it into your home. What is the function?
If this is the room used for TV watching, you will want comfortable seating for everyone in your family. Here is an example of a room I redesigned for a large family, and the goal was to have a cozy spot for everyone to be together. If the room is not used frequently and only as an area for guests to talk, you may consider a smaller option such as a loveseat and chairs that can be moved around as needed.
