Industry leaders such as Houzz and NKBA run surveys from the prior year tracking trends in Kitchen-related projects. If you are planning a remodeling project in your kitchen, it’s good to understand these trends especially if you are considering selling your home in the next several years.
The 2017 U.S. Houzz Kitchen Trends Study reported:
- The style trend is away from traditional and contemporary is the most popular across all age groups. Modern and Farmhouse designed kitchens are on the rise among the millennials. (For a review of the difference between a Modern and Contemporary style, click here.)
- Durability is what people want! People love the look of marble and want the durability of a quartz countertop. Porcelain flooring is preferred for its look and durability, though wood is rated highest for the way it looks.
- This note is an interesting takeaway from the study: “A third of homeowners report leading a healthier lifestyle after a kitchen renovation, from eating more fruits and vegetables to preparing more meals at home.” Click here to read the full article on Houzz.
Trulia, an online real estate resource, predicts 2017 will see an increase in Matte Appliances in place of the classic stainless steel look. Click here to read more about Trulia’s home predictions.
Remodeling cited an interesting statistic worth noting in 2016. A minor kitchen remodel of $20, 842 had a resale value of $15,560, and the cost recouped when sold 74.7% of the investment (this is specific to the Mid-Atlantic area of the U.S.) If you have a timeworn kitchen, remodeling is a sound investment in your home. Young new home buyers are looking to move into a house with an updated kitchen; they do not have the time or money to take on the project and will walk away from an outdated kitchen.

According to Forbes, satin brass fixtures are the way of the future. I believe this is a function of taste and what you like. The point here is that new products with new finishes are frequently coming out, which is fantastic for all us! Incorporate what you like and the colors you like to see. Though many of the trend reports indicate that white and gray for wall color and cabinet color are highly trending, you simply may not like that look. Surround yourself with what you love, and your kitchen experience will be happier!
