With the start of a new season, I always find myself wanting to freshen up my home décor. Are you looking for a change-up this spring in your home décor and unsure where to start? One complaint I hear from clients is that they walk into a Home Decorating store and get overwhelmed. Or they make a purchase, bring it home, and it looks out of place in the surrounding. Let’s go over some ideas on how you can make a change this spring:
Start with a color you love!
This color does not have to be a color that is trending now, and you shouldn’t be afraid to use a bold color. I love this advice from designer Nate Berkus, “Give yourself permission to use a bold color. You don’t have to love it everywhere — one throw or pillow might be just enough.†And that is great advice. Pick the accent color you love and purchase a lovely vase, throw pillow, throw, candle, or piece of art.
Want a change but unsure where to start?
Think about the places you like to vacation or wish you could vacation. What do you love about the location? Think about incorporating an element of that area into your design. You could start with a picture of the area. Online sites such as AllPosters.com offers you the opportunity to pick a picture, see it framed against the wall color of your choice. Etsy.com provides hand-crafted items; Society6 also offers unusual art options. If you have a favorite museum, go online and see if they have an online store selling reproductions, you will be amazed at what you can find!
Don’t be afraid to use patterns!
Geometric patterns are definitely in style right now, if you are unsure how to incorporate them into your home, you can do so without concern if you follow this one tip – stay with the same color using various levels of the same color and use one color as the base backdrop. So, what do I mean by this? Here’s an example, if you love blue, you can purchase pillows using varying shades of blue in different geometric patterns all with taupe as the base backdrop.
Add a rug!
Layering rugs are OK. In fact, if you have a rug that is too small for your space you can place a neutral colored area rug under the decorative rug to serve as a backdrop.
Use Your Treasures!
Do you have a treasure that was handed down by a family member packed away because it doesn’t fit into your look? Here is a tip about accessories, mixing and matching them are OK. Pull those items out of storage and display those important elements that tell a story, which is part of your story. There are always ways to weave pieces together!
