Color trends are not created by random people in attic rooms. Color trends are actually established by international color forecasting organizations. These groups create color palettes, color direction and forecasts annually to the design industry. Manufacturers look and rely on these forecasts for their company direction and sales success. These color associations actually forecast color direction and trends with remarkable accuracy!
CMG (Color Marketing Group) is one of these groups responsible for choosing the direction of color and design trends. They help translate the trends into salable colors for manufacturers. This international group has over 1000 members from 20 different countries and forecast color trends eighteen months or more in advance to manufacturers.
Pantone, Inc has been a renowned authority on color for more than 45 years. They have been inspiring design professionals and the industry for years. What I did not realize about Pantone was that in 1963 the founder, Lawrence Herbert, developed a standardized color reproduction system that revolutionized the color trend world. His insight that the color spectrum is seen and interpreted differently by each individual led him to develop the Pantone Matching System, a book of standardized color in fan format. By standardizing the colors, different manufacturers in different locations and industries can now refer to the Pantone system and be assured that all colors will match. (Now I understand that it is not a pure “coincidence” that my new bed sheets and new dress are exactly the same new hot color for the season!)
Every season designers wait for Pantone to publish their Fashion Color Report, announce their new seasonal palette and “Color of the Year.” This year Pantone announced Honeysuckle as the “Color of the Year. We will see this color in everything. Clothes, shoes, jewelry, bedding, nail polish and yes even a Pantone Visa Card will be sporting this color! Pantone has described this new color as encouraging, uplifting and one that will instill confidence, courage and spirit in times of stress.

In today’s world we often grab silverware from the drawer as we need it, or it comes in the brown bag that often holds our dinner! This week I was challenged to learn and demonstrate how to properly set a formal table.
One of my long time favorite clients needed help in preparing her home for a formal dinner party this weekend. Since we had previously redesigned the first level she needed us to lightly Christmas decorate and prepare her dining room. One of the assignments was to dress and set the very large dining room table for a formal dinner. Now I learned the basics of setting a
table when I was young but setting a formal table for many courses was not at the forefront of my brain. Fortunately, buried in one of my folders called “useful information to save,” I found some great information that I thought would be useful to many of you during this holiday season should you find yourself having to set a table above your expertise!

Research shows homes that are staged sell faster and closer to asking price. Even in this present economy we are hearing homes selling in 1 week….4 days… and even in 48 hours when they are properly staged to appeal to prospective home buyers.
There are 4 important areas for the DIY to concentrate on before the realtor comes to appraise and assess your property.
Create a generic looking house. You want your home to look more like a “model” house than your personal home. Remove personal pictures, calendars, diplomas and clear the front of your refrigerator of magnets and Dr. appointment reminders.
Thoroughly clean the inside of your home and check for odors. Since many of us cannot detect smells in our own home invite a friend over and ask for an honest assessment. Does she smell mold, cigarettes, or pet odors? ( Hey, what are friends for.)
Walk your home and see if it looks and feels updated. Remove outdated wallpaper and paint faded walls and peeling paint. Assess your kitchen and bathrooms. Updated kitchens and bathrooms are what the buyers are looking for. How does the yard look. Do the trees need to be trimmed, beds weeded and mulched? Any upgrades you do now will help eliminate buyers decreasing your asking price.
Create space and flow in each room. Rooms that are loaded with furniture and stuff will create the feel that your home is smaller than it is. Buyers will think that since you out grew your home that it is too small for them. Make sure 3 adults can easily flow through each of your rooms.

Decorating in the summer is all about the heat. In this warmest of seasons it’s important to control the temperature in your spaces, opting for cool accessories, and functional items which will help to naturally reduce the amount of heat that is transmitted into your home. While of course you can bathe the space in frigid air conditioning, that’s not healthy, cost effective, or environmentally sound. The alternative is to use clever home decorating to naturally maintain cool and relaxing environments in your home.
The first thing you should do is remove and warm or fuzzy accessories within the space. Change couch and cushion covers to reflect soft, cool cotton or smooth silk facades. Thick throws and blankets should be exchanged for softer, lighter pieces, or removed from the space completely. Fuzzy rugs can also be removed and, if necessary, replaced with bamboo or thatch throw pieces.
Sunlight is another factor you should consider when decorating for the summer. Gauzy thin curtains that generally let in plenty of sunlight should be replaced or supplemented with heavier shades which will stop the brunt of light from getting in. If too much sun shines through closed windows, it can get trapped in the house, causing a greenhouse effect.
Another summer decorating trick is to try to lower, or eliminate lights whenever possible. A nice dark atmosphere tends to feel a few degrees lower, while brighter spaces can actually feel perceptibly warmer than they actually are. Brighter light bulbs also tend to give off a small, but constant amount of heat, which will have an effect on the overall temp of the space.
Summer decorating is about accommodating and controlling the heat in your home. Through control of light, air and texture, it should be possible to create a space which is comfortable and invigorating through even the warmest of the dog days of summer.
