Fall Home Projects: Add an Enclosed Deck or Patio

As we head into September, it’s a fantastic time to think about any home projects you would like to get done. If there is a project that you have been putting off, the fall is a great time to complete it. As daylight dwindles and evenings are cooler, you may consider how nice it would be to have a 3-season porch or consider adding a screened-in area to keep the bugs out. Adding this space creates more living space and value to your home.

How to Choose an Outdoor Rug

A fantastic way to add a fresh look to your outdoor deck or patio is to add a rug. As it does in your home, an outdoor rug ties an area together, adds comfort, and can be a beautiful way to add a fresh color combination. The questions are what type should you purchase and are all outdoor rugs the same? There are two categories of rugs that you may choose from:  synthetic and natural fibers. Be sure to check the label or the product description, so you know what you are buying. Let’s review the types and benefits:

5 Tips for a Fabulous Deck or Patio Area

As we head into summer and have the ability to spend peaceful time outside on our deck or patio, is your outdoor seating area what you would like for it to be? For a fresh look, enjoy these five tips to help you achieve the look you want for your outdoor seating, entertaining and eating area.

1. Bring the comforts of the indoors outside.

In a sunny area, add a solar powered lamp that you can make yourself! Click here to see the step-by-step instructions; you will be amazed at how easy this is to create!

2. Warm up your setting with the soft glow of candles.

3. Any space, small or large, can get a fresh look by the use of pops of color and patterns.

4. Incorporate plants into your outdoor area.

You will want to vary the height of the plants to create your conversation areas and add potted flowers for color and beauty. If you are placing pots in a full-sun area you will want to choose heat-tolerant plants, click here to review a list of options. Use a potting soil that will help maintain moisture if you are not a consistent person that waters, such as MiracleGro’s Moisture Control Potting Soil. If you already have the potting soil add the “water storing crystals” to the soil, link for more information.

5. Paint your furniture a new color.

I recently had a client, inspired by my latest articles on furniture transformation, sent me photos of her latest DIY project. She transformed a bistro style table and chairs with new paint colors.

Furniture before being painted:

Furniture after being painted:

What a difference! She didn’t like the color it was and used Rustoleum’s Paint + Primer in Satin Espresso, and finished it with Rustoleum’s Metallic Flat Burnished Amber for a slight metallic sheen. A couple of tips that she offered:  Your hand gets tired from spray-painting, to help, use the Rustoleum Spray Paint Can Soft Grip to prevent hand fatigue. Wear gloves; nitrile is the strongest won’t tear as easily. Now all she needs to do is figure out some fun pillows! The best part of any redesign, the accessories! Thank you for sharing your fabulous project with us!

Outdoor Decorating Trends

shutterstock_286718537I love this time of year, warmer weather, longer days and a time to think about outside entertaining. Is your deck or patio ready for guests? Just as there are trends in indoor décor, you will see the same in outdoor decorating. There are some new trends this year I wanted to share with you.

Indoors Goes Outdoors

The concept of creating a look outdoors that appears like the indoors isn’t new, the amount of items and accessories available is more readily found and at an affordable price. Just as we like a cozy and comfortable indoor, we have the same expectation outdoors. You will see more options in rugs, ottomans, side tables, outdoor lighting and all the accessories to complete a comfortable and stylish outdoor seating area.

The options for brightly patterned and colored cushions and pillows are plentiful, click here to view some options. You will see more furniture made of natural items such as rattan, wicker, and teak. This style from the ‘70s will make a big comeback with a mixture of these materials, incorporating weaving and a “crochet” look.  Click here for an example of mixed materials in outdoor seating.

You will need an option for storing your throws and candles and anything you would not want to be exposed to nature all the time. I love this idea from Target, it uses the look of wicker and serves as a coffee table and storage area, ideal for a small deck or patio.

Finish the Look

  • Pick the pop color you wish to use in your outdoor seating area and incorporate it into garden stools that will serve as side tables.
  • Add a beautiful rug to create a conversation area.
  • Add lighting. Use table lamps constructed for outdoor use or string lights, whatever fits your style.
  • For some inspiration check out my Pinterest board displaying seating arrangements and accessories.

4 Ways to Liven Up Your Deck or Patio

shutterstock_286718537Are you getting ready for summertime parties and dining outdoors? Is your deck or patio in need of a fresh look? If you already have the furniture consider changing or adding the following:

  1. Lighting
  2. Rugs or Flooring
  3. Shade (if your deck or patio is in direct sunlight)
  4. Color

Outdoor Lighting Options

There are situations where you may not want to worry about real candles burning. In these cases, I suggest an outdoor LED candle available in many shapes and sizes. Personally, I prefer candles with timers (because who ever remembers to turn the candles off?) and find the candles that require two type AA are longer-lasting than those that require three AAA batteries. Another option is to use the white string lights or fairy lights, I have many saved ideas in my Outdoor Pinterest board, click here to view. If you have a lot of sunlight on your patio or deck, consider using fun solar powered lighting, such as these from Gardeners.

Outdoor Flooring Options

If you have a cement patio and wish you could change it, try instant flooring! Click here for an idea from Ikea to use outdoor floor tiles. Keep in mind that these instant floors can be utilized in an apartment or rental balconies where you want to add a different look as they “float” on top of the cement. Add a colorful rug to tie together conversation areas such as these ideas from Overstock.

Shade Options

If your deck or patio is in direct sunlight, you will want some shade. Add a table that can support an umbrella or if you have space, add a retractable awning or install a pergola. If you’re interested in the construction of a pergola, click here for instructions from DIYnetwork. Even if you live in an apartment or have a very small space to work with you can still have shade to make your outdoor area more enjoyable by using a half umbrella, click here to view an option from World Market.

Color Options

I saved my favorite topic for last! Use the same rules inside your house as you do outside! Don’t be afraid to use color which can be achieved in your furniture, pillows, throws, rugs, containers, or wall art. If you have vinyl siding, you will not want to put a hole through the siding to hang something! Instead, click here to view an option for hanging things from vinyl siding without affecting the siding. There are many options available to you for outdoor wall art; such as canvases, metal artwork, decorative ironworks, or rustic cottage-styled items. To view some ideas for inspiration, click here.

Color can come from beautiful flowering plants and various sizes and heights of containers. I also love the idea of hanging gardens, click here to view an idea. My Outdoor Pinterest board includes many ideas for vertical gardens and screening, click here to see.

Note:  With all of the viruses that mosquitoes carry you will want to manage them in your yard as much as possible. Click here for a Special Report: Moderating Menacing Mosquitoes from radio host, Mike McGrath from “You Bet Your Garden.” To view a report from Consumer Reports, click here for repellents that can be used by people.

Getting Your Deck or Patio Ready For Summer Fun

Home ExteriorsIt’s that time of year where we bring out our patio furniture and accessories and decide what we need to clean, pitch or replace.  Spring is a good time to take a look at your grill cover or furniture covers, if they are completely falling apart it may be time to replace.  Click here for some options.

Checklist for your deck or patio:

  • If you have a wood deck, take a look at it and decide if it needs to be cleaned?  I found a great article that you may wish to review if you plan to clean your deck, especially if you want to use a power washer, click here to read.  For ideas on finishes for your deck click here for tips from Better Homes & Garden.
  • How is your patio furniture looking?  Is it in need of a good cleaning, repair, or perhaps new cushions?  Click here for some helpful ideas on how to clean various outdoor items.
  • Pull out your pots and determine if they need to be cleaned or discarded.  If you have old terracotta pots, which can be challenging since they dry out so quickly, consider using them as decorative items in your garden to add a unique structure or planting idea.  Click here for a fantastic vertical eye-catching plant display using old terracotta pots.

Now for the fun part, how do you want to decorate?

To quickly add color and spruce up your deck or patio, consider adding throw pillows in a new color with matching lanterns.  Keep in mind, you can always change the color of a lantern, check out the many options at your local home store, choosing a paint intended for outdoor use.

Create an instant conversation area, add a throw rug for a cozy seating area.  If you don’t want to deal with real candles if you have children, there are excellent flameless choices now that you can leave outside, have timers, and are battery-operated.  Check out some of the options by clicking here.  Keep in mind that lamps and floor lamps can be used outside to add warmth and ambience to a sitting area.  To look at some options of outdoor lamps and floor lamps, click here, for an extensive collection at Home Depot.

It’s probably too early to create pots, but you can start the planning process.  I suggest creating a plan before you head out to your local nursery, so you don’t purchase too much or too little.  You will want to have a lay out in mind of the number of pots you intend to fill and the heights that you require.  If you spend the time on this now, you will have fabulous results!  Happy planning and don’t forget to pick up the necessary potting soil for that project.

redesign rightEnjoy your spring!  And remember, if you need help with any redesign or color consultation project give me a call 610.955.8202, I would be glad to help you!
