Interior Redesign

As we go into a new season, and the kids head back to school, is it time to consider a redesign or renovation on your basement?

Does your basement look like the photo on the left?  Could you imagine that it could look as fabulous as the photo on the right?  Here is an example from HGTV.com where the look goes from disorganized drab to an organized and happy feeling!

If you have an unfinished basement and you’re not prepared to finish it, or you’re unhappy with the tiled or linoleum flooring – consider these carpet floor tiles from Flor.com where you can mix and match colors or create designs, which is a nice idea as you can complete one area of your basement as the designated play area or family area.  This can supply color and comfort to a cold and unwelcoming floor.

I also like the idea of creating something that can work as a storage area now and then can be used as something else when your child grows up or your needs change.  This idea from Realsimple.com uses an Ikea.com shelving unit, which was turned on its side, then pillows were used to make it a seating area and baskets or plastic bins can be used for storage.  If you wish to make this look from scratch yourself, check out these instructions from HGTV.com.

Keep in mind that you don’t have to use “kid” colors or as I like to refer to them as Fisher Price colors … you can use any color combination you like!  There are many storage ideas that come in different colors, such as these Mercado Baskets from Serena & Lily – I love the Navy and White!

Keep in mind, you can make your basement storage match your décor.  In this photo from BHG.com, the storage boxes all match the neutral tone of the shelves.

The quickest way to make a change in a basement that is used by kids is to be sure the space is organized and clutter free.  This requires that there be a place for everything.  This requires a system that works for you and your kids.  If everything is labeled and the kids know where things belong, the clean-up process should be stress-free for you and them!
