According to TotalMortgage.com, as of August of 2013 the market has changed, price increases have slowed, and more homes are on the market with many potential buyers out there. In the past, the general wisdom was to take your home off the market during the holidays, but you might be missing out on that potential buyer! Today so much of the initial home previewing is done on the internet and buyers are always looking. Don’t be afraid to keep your home on the market and consider these ideas when preparing your home for viewing.
- During the holidays put out a minimal amount of decorations. Â When selling, the goal is to keep your home as generic as possible as this will appeal to the greatest number of buyers.
- Limit your outdoor holiday lights. For example, use a simple string of lights to accentuate an architectural feature or use a spotlight to feature a beautiful tree in your yard.
- Be sure your home is kept warm! If someone walks in and it’s chilly, think of the reaction they’ll have!
- Since there is less daylight in the winter months, make sure your outdoor lighting is up-to-date and bright. It is always a great idea to use timers on some of the lights in your home so when people drive by they see a warm and inviting home.
- Limit the burning of holiday scented candles as many people may be allergic or be turned off by certain smells.
- If you like to bake during the holidays by all means bake. There is nothing more inviting in a home than home cooked goodies. Even better, leave some for the potential buyer to sample!
- Are you overwhelmed by how to set up your home to sell? Do you have no time to get your home ready to sell? Bring in a home stager to ensure that your home presents beautifully! To read more about home staging, check out my blog post titled, “Why do I need a professional home stager to sell my home?”  Also, read Setting up Your Home to Sell for some very valuable information.
