Interested in renovating your flooring?

Are you considering replacing your flooring this fall? It is an excellent time of year for those renovations in preparation for the holidays and guests arriving. Remember that if you have a pet, hair and dust will be visible on darker floors. Let’s explore the different types of wood or wood-like flooring options.

Flooring Options:

  • Solid Plank – this is considered real wood that usually comes in a thickness of 3/8 to 3/4 of an inch and can be refinished, stained, and sanded offering decades of use.
  • Engineered Wood – or prefabricated wood where the top layer is veneer glued to wood.
  • Reclaimed Wood – recycled wood from old barns or factories; people like it for an aged look and is a solid surface.
  • Porcelain “Wood” – rugged you can spill on it, works well with water damage, but it doesn’t feel like wood and is cold to the touch; whereas, wood offers a warmer feel.
  • Luxury Vinyl Plank – Great option for homes with pets.
How much flooring should I order?

If you plan to install the flooring yourself, refer to this video for instructions on measuring your room to understand how much flooring you need to order. Lowes offers flooring calculators online to help you with this project, and they may also provide a free measuring service if you buy flooring from them.

What is the Janka Hardness Scale?

While you are looking into hardwood flooring, you will come across the phrase, Janka Hardness Scale, which tests how well various wood options dent or ding. However, this scale does not apply to engineered wood flooring.

My recommendation is to visit multiple flooring stores to get an idea of what you like, what it costs, and what type of flooring would work best in your home. Once you narrow the options and have a good idea of what you want, get multiple quotes from flooring installers. Understand who is doing the installation and what the warranty is on it.
