Tips and Ideas

I love the warmth and cozy feel that fall colors offer.  Bringing nature’s palette of orange, red and my favorite color, gold, into your home décor can quickly change the look of a room and provide a comfortable seasonal look.  I wanted to focus this post on five ideas that you can quickly accomplish for lovely fall décor.

    1.  Drape a silk leaf garland across your mantel.  Enhance with candle holders, gold pumpkins and pine cones for a beautiful nature-inspired look.  By the way, don’t be afraid to paint or create designs on your pumpkins.  Terrain has a fabulous step-by-step on creating Botanical Pumpkins that are stunning, using natural ferns, leaves and vines to decorate, click here to review the steps.  If you don’t have the time for that type of project, consider purchasing wire, glass or faux pumpkins from home stores such as Pottery Barn or Pier 1.

    2.  Decorate with fall flowers and pumpkins.

I love this simple idea from Inspired By Charm where they combined natural flowers with silk leaves on a stack of books with a small pumpkin to finish off the vignette.  (Photo attribution, InspiredbyCharm.com.)  Keep in mind when creating your arrangement you will want to group objects of three to five, varying the height and the texture of the objects.  This offers interest to the eye.

    3.  Use glass vases or jars for an instant fall look.  Fill apothecary jars, which come in different shapes, heights, and sizes (click here for some options from Michael’s Craft Store) with a variety of nuts, pine cones, silk leaves and pumpkins layering to add interest.  Finish off with fall-inspired ribbon, raffia, or burlap ribbon.  You can quickly create a beautiful fall table setting by using a vase you own, filled with a variety of nuts and a candle.

    4.  Use pumpkins for natural vases.
    Decorating with Pumpkins
I love this idea as you can do it with pumpkins of all sizes.  Use what you have at home, a drinking glass, a votive holder whatever fits your pumpkin size to hold the water and flower arrangement.  Place sprigs of inexpensive grocery store flowers mixed with cuttings from your trees, bushes, grasses, or add purchased dried or silk items from your local craft store.  For step-by-step instructions from Martha Stewart, click here.

    5.  Don’t forget the outdoors!  Add a fall wreath to your front door.  Using your summer pots, create a lovely entry way stacking pumpkins of various sizes on top of each other on an urn-style container.  Use stackable hay bales that you can purchase at craft stores or pick up from your local farmer to add depth and interest to your grouping.  Intersperse seasonal chrysanthemums and Indian corn bundles and you will have an instant beautiful autumn look!
