mirrors

I love when one thing can make a very significant difference in a room, such as a beautiful mirror!  A mirror brings light, a feeling of expansiveness and if placed properly can repeat a piece of artwork!  For my blog post this week I want to give some tips and ideas on decorating with mirrors and their effect in a room.

This idea is from HouseBeautiful.com where they placed a large mirror on the mantel, and then a smaller decorative empty frame inside giving a sensational illusion of depth and interest.  Another idea is to check out your local salvage and antique shops for a frame and then you can go to your local glass company and have a piece of beveled or plain mirror cut to fit!  If you do this make sure the mirror reflects something beautiful.  If it reflects the ceiling fan you may not want to hang it over the fireplace.

Though this look, also from HouseBeautiful.com, uses antiqued mirror tiles, you can easily get affordable mirror tiles that come in 12×12 squares at HomeDepot.com to create a wall of mirror to create the illusion of doubling your room size.  I did find a technique where you can make your own antique-looking mirror from HGTV.com, click here for those instructions.

In this room, they placed the mirror, sized perfectly, across from a window doubling the light in the area as well as adding depth and color.  (Photo from HGTV.com.)

In this bedroom from Sunset.com, they use small mirror tiles to create a bedroom headboard that visually expands the room and quickly and inexpensively creates a nice focal point to the room.  These tiles are available on Ikea.com.  (Photo by Thomas J. Story on Sunset.com.)

I also like the idea of adding a mirror to bedroom doors or closet doors, in this example from HouseBeautiful.com, they added mirror and molding to a wardrobe, which has a beautiful finished look.  Keep in mind that you can add mirror and molding to any plain construction door to make the door look polished and accomplish a fabulous look.

If you want a large mirror to reflect a large window but don’t want to make the investment, try hanging door length mirrors horizontally, using two or three, depending on your wall space for a quick dramatic effect.  Home stores will list these as door length mirrors.  Target.com offers frameless mirrors or ones with frames depending on the look you want to achieve.  Keep in mind you can create an antiqued look on a new frame by using your desired paint color combo and an antiquing glaze, click here for instructions on antiquing a frame with glaze.

I love this idea!  Place a beautiful arched mirror across from a window in your room and essentially double the light and exposure in your room!  Absolutely beautiful!

Go to your local home décor store, such as Pier1.com and you will be amazed at the different shapes and materials that are incorporated into mirror options.  Play around with this idea of using mirror(s) in your interior decorating and you might be surprised by the illuminating transformation of your space!
