Hygge

    Comfortable Home

As we head into fall and the weather gets cooler here on the east coast, we long for warmth and comfort. What does that look like for you? There are many trending concepts to support a simpler, back-to-basics, way of life. To name a couple:

    Hygge, pronounced “hoo-ga”

Meik Wiking, CEO of the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen and author of “The Little Book of Hygge,” states:

“Hygge is about an atmosphere and an experience. It is about being with the people we love. A feeling of home. A feeling that we are safe.”

    Wabi-Sabi

There are various meanings to this Japanese term, here is an explanation from Leonard Koren, author of Wabi-Sabi for Artists, Designers, Poets & Philosophers:

“Wabi Sabi is the beauty of things imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete, the antithesis of our classical Western notion of beauty as something perfect, enduring, and monumental.”

These concepts embrace the idea that your home should be a place of sanctuary in a simple and clutter-free way. Think about colors found in nature, weathered materials that are truly weathered-by-age. Pull out that old family frame or chest, regardless of the imperfections and add it to a room. The theory is that items loved by time have more meaning and add a peaceful feel to a room.

How can you create a simple, cozy, sanctuary-like area in your home?

    1. Remove the clutter. Create a no-technology zone where you and your guests can take a break and relax.
    2. Get comfortable. Create a comfortable area for you and your guests, with the proper pillows, fun textured throws, and various candles to burn.
    3. Embrace nature. Bring interesting branches or cuttings from your yard into your home, place in a vase as part of a centerpiece, use the colors of the season.
    4. Incorporate old and weathered items into your space.
    5. Have friends over and entertain in a relaxing environment. Have a movie night or a game night, having friends over does not have to be complicated. Think warm drinks such as tea or coffee, and plenty of relaxation.

It’s all about creating a peaceful area in your home, regardless of what is happening in your world, your home should be a sanctuary that is comfortable for you to enjoy and make new memories.
