Do you have a room that has become the dumping zone of unused things? If you find yourself in this situation, let’s come up with a plan to help you claim that extra space and turn it into a lovely living area that you can enjoy! Whether it’s a guest room that you want to transform or perhaps a kid’s room that you haven’t had a kid in for many years, the benefits of reclaiming and redesigning this space are numerous and will enhance your home and your life.
5-Step Plan to Reclaim Your Space:
- Plan: What would you like to have? Have you always wanted a peaceful reading area in your home only for you? Or do you want a craft and work area? Come up with a list of functions that you would like to do in this reclaimed space.
- Draw the Room: I am visual and like to draw out a plan. An alternative would be to use one of the many virtual home design products available. Based on the room’s purpose, come up with a list of things needed in the new space. Determine the size of each piece that is going into the room and decide if it will fit in the newly reclaimed space.
- Remove the Stuff: Now is the time to get serious about your accumulated things. If you have financial records, go through them and decide if you need them. Understand how long you need to keep paper financial records and how to manage them. Check out my article “Home Office Tips, Decorating Ideas and Solutions” for ideas.
- Investment: Does your new plan require purchasing any furniture or items? Do your research to understand what you like and can afford. Try to lean into quality and not cheap “fill the space” pieces. Review what you already own; perhaps a piece could be moved into this new space and free up space in another room. It is a win-win scenario where you don’t have to purchase an item and eliminate clutter in another room!
- Decorate: This is my favorite part! Even if this is a workspace or craft area, it can still be lovely and bring you joy. Too often, I have found people neglect these areas of their homes, but if you are working in them, they should bring you joy. Let’s start with color! Be sure to pick your paint color in natural daylight. Consider the type of lighting that you will be using in the room. If this is a craft room, you will be using bright task lighting.
