Wood kitchen room with decorated tile backsplashIs your kitchen old and outdated?  If you are planning a kitchen renovation it can be quite costly yet is proven to have the largest return on investment when selling a home.  In other words, any money invested in your kitchen is money well spent.  There are several questions to consider before you start a renovation let’s first focus on your cabinets.

    Paint Your Cabinets

Do you like the shape of your current cabinets?  If your cabinets are solid wood, you may consider painting them.  Rustoleum® has come out with a complete kit, Cabinet Transformation, which provides everything you need to paint your cabinets.  Click here for a how-to video to show you how the product works and the steps involved with the project.  Keep in mind you will need the time and patience to complete this DIY project.  One of the bonuses of this product is that it works on various cabinet types.  There are companies that specialize in replacing the components of the cabinets; such as Keystone Wood, click here to view the many options.  For more information on painting your cabinets, read this article from Houzz, “From the Pros: How to Paint Kitchen Cabinets.”

    Reface Your Cabinets

Another less expensive option is to reface your cabinets.  There are companies that do this professionally, and you can find them locally or go to your local Home Depot to learn about the process and options.  To find out about the cost saving option of cabinet refacing, click here to read more from House Logic from the National Association of Realtors®.  Refacing can also be a DIY project; click here to view an instructional video from Cabinet Doors Depot that explains the whole process.  The video does make it look easy!

    Replace Your Cabinets

If you decide you want to replace your cabinets entirely, there are choices to consider.  I suggest going through photos on sites such as Pinterest to view design ideas to help you decide on the style for your cabinets.  There are many companies and home stores that offer stock cabinets, which is a less expensive option compared with custom cabinets.  For a preview of the top trends in kitchen cabinetry, read these tips from Better Homes and Garden.  If you choose to go with custom cabinetry, do your research, get references and get everything detailed in the contract.
