Desk Transformation

In my last decorating article, How to Transform Old Furniture, I showed you the before and after of how my old mahogany bedroom furniture was updated with a brand new look. I love the idea of using old furniture, updating it with a fresh look and incorporating it differently in your home. This week I wanted to share with you the before and after of my desk transformation.

Creative Storage Ideas

redesign-changeHave you ever found yourself sitting in an area of your house and not liking it, disliking the amount of stuff in it, or not enjoying the feel of the room? If any of these apply, you may want to consider a fresh way of storing things, creating a new look for your existing things, and changing the flow of the room.

Storage

There are many out-of-the-box storage and design ideas, and I put together a Pinterest board for you to peruse various ideas for inspiration, click here to view the Creative Storage Ideas board. Keep in mind that you don’t have to use plastic bins to get organized! You can use items you may already own, such as a dresser or bookcase that can be repurposed to fit a space. Depending on how old your home is, storage places may not be plentiful, and you can create your own without remodeling your home. To help you find some creative and unique storage ideas, I looked around for you and came up with a list of options for you, click the link to view shopping options:

Create a New Look

I have covered the topic of creating a new look in past decorating posts about repurposing and creating new things out of old items such as What is Old is New. I challenge you to look at the pieces in the room where you are in need of a new look and consider a new way of looking at it. Perhaps removing clutter and organizing may be the best option; however, adding more items to an already cluttered area may not be the best choice. Consider taking an item that is in the room and modify it to handle multiple purposes, or there may be another piece of furniture in another room in your house that could fit the perfect spot. Remember, textures, and paint color can be changed.

Feel of a Room

Several aspects of a room can cause you not to “feel right” in it. Often it can be as simple as the paint color in the room doesn’t work for you. Frequently I have found that it is the layout or flow of the room, and a room redesign can take care of that. Perhaps you have too much furniture in a room? Taking a step back and looking at your house with fresh eyes can be challenging, yet it offers you the opportunity of seeing your home differently.Redesign Right

What is old is new!

Don’t you love the look of vintage?  Who hasn’t paged through the many cool items on Etsy.com and thought, “I could make that!”  For those of you who can, that’s great, and for those of you who wish you could …you CAN!

There are many ways to resurrect items!  Remember spray paint is your friend .  Anyone can paint don’t be afraid – fearlessly give it a try!  Click here and check out just one simple idea on how to change an ordinary old table into a retro piece of art!  Be create and let your imaginations go wild!  I love to spray paint and while writing this article I found this great and informative article on how to spray paint. Click here to check it out, it is fabulous!

Want to update your chairs easily?  Just replace the fabric or paint them – it’s not hard and it can make a huge difference in your room.  Whether you have chairs or bar stools here is a clever way to bring life to them again. If you have an old dining room set with fabric seats – change the fabric to a new fun color. The newest color this season is Tangerine!  What an easy way to update your tired dining room!  Click here for a step-by-step process on how to recover fabric chairs!  Since these chairs do not require a great deal of fabric you can splurge on higher end fabrics and bring your room to a whole new level!

If you want a change in your living room but can’t make any major purchases – pick up a new set of lamps at an antique store, or repurpose some lamps that you no longer like.  Keep in mind the trusty spray paint can modify anything so don’t get hung up on the color!  Purchase a nifty new lampshade at your local home store (such as Target, Home Goods, Loews, etc.) and you’re in business!

Anything can be repurposed – all you need is to look at things with fresh eyes – take on the challenge and ask yourself, “what could I do to this piece to give it a whole new look?”  Have fun!!
