Let’s Plan:  What would you like to have? Have you always wanted a reading area, a peaceful area in your home that was only for you? Or perhaps you want a craft and work area?  Come up with a list of functions that you would like to do in this reclaimed space.

Draw the Room:  I am a visual person and like to draw out a plan.  Come up with a list of things or needed items that will be required by activity in the new space.  Determine the size of each piece that is going into the room and decide if it will fit in the newly reclaimed space.

Remove the Stuff:  Now is the time to get serious about these things that you have accumulated.  If you have financial records, go through them and decide if you need them.  Click here for some tips on ways to organize a home office from House Beautiful.  If you are unsure about what financial records to keep, click here for some ideas on managing your household records.

Investments:  Does your new plan require purchasing any furniture or items?  Do your research and do some leg work on the internet before you venture out.  Take a good look at the items that you have throughout your home, perhaps there is a piece of furniture, chair, etc. that would work in this new space and free up space in another room.  A win-win scenario where you don’t have to purchase an item and you eliminate clutter in another room!

Decorate:  My favorite part!  Even if this is a work space or craft area it can still be lovely and bring you joy.  Too often I have found people neglect these areas of their home, but if you are working in them, they should bring you joy.  Let’s start with color!  Be sure to pick your paint color in natural daylight.  Consider the type of lighting that you will be using in the room.  If this is a craft room, you will be using bright task lighting.  Pick up paint chips and tape them to the walls and review how you like them at different times of the day to ensure you will be happy with the color.  Choosing paint hues in warm grays, tans, buttercream and sage greens offer a soothing affect in any space.
