Front Door Refresher Tips

Springtime Front DoorAs we prepare for Spring, it’s a good time to reevaluate your front door and overall entrance impression. I decided to take a fun approach to this topic that I find fascinating. In Feng Shui, the entrance of your home is considered important as your house receives energy, or Chi, from this entry. What is Feng Shui (pronounced “fung shway”)? The phrase is comprised of two Chinese words feng meaning wind and shui meaning water. The thought is that wind and water are the two elements essential to humans. These key elements are carriers of chi, life force or life energy. Mind Body Green offers this explanation:

Feng shui is a powerful method of experiencing more balance, joy, and inspiration in your life. The ancient Chinese art and science of feng shui give you the tools to create balance and harmony in your surroundings, which helps you to move forward with ease and inspiration. One of the basic tenets of feng shui is that you are influenced by everything in your outer environment. So, if you arrange your environment in a way that properly circulates life-force energy, you will flourish.

In conclusion, if your front door has good health and is balanced the better the result you will have in your home. On that topic, here are a few ways to ensure good Feng Shui for your entrance:

  1. Remove the clutter from your entrance and clean all debris, wash windows, to increase the flow of energy to your home.
  2. Check the way your door looks. Does it need to be painted? Is the hardware rusted and need to be replaced?
  3. Add proper lighting.
  4. Note, the direction that your front door faces determine the paint color you should use, click here to read an article on picking the proper front door color using Feng Shui guidance.

As I have been in the Interior Decorating and Home Staging business for over 15 years, I know that the impression of the front door is critical and sets the tone for how someone feels when walking into the house. I take homeowners through the step of looking at their front door with fresh eyes, at the door, and from the street view. They are both critical when you are trying to sell your home and make a good impression. Here are a few of my personal recommendations:

  • Add appropriately sized pots with tall, healthy plants (that you can see from the street) at the entrance; they should not block your way.
  • Add a new and clean welcome mat.
  • Clean your front door, add fresh paint, and hardware.
  • Add a springtime wreath that is welcoming.

Decorating your Entryway this Summer

Whether you have your home on the market, thinking about putting your home on the market, or simply want to spruce up your entryway – I have a few easy tips for you!

Paint or Replace Your Front Door

Bang-for-your-buck, the best way to make a change is to paint your front door!  If you’re tired of the color that came with your house, give your front door a new life with a fresh color.  Determine if you have a wood or metal door as this will impact the type of paint that you use.  Check with the home or paint store that you prefer for their advice.  For expert online advice on how to paint your wood front door from diyNetwork, click here.  If you have a metal door, click here for some advice.  If your door is very old, you may wish to replace it.  If so, here is a gallery of great ideas to repurpose your old door.

Note:  If you have a homeowners’ association in your neighborhood you may be limited to the colors you can select, check your by-laws first!

A Fun Summertime Wreath

Pick a wreath that expresses you and your family’s idea of a fun summer!  If you love living in flip flops all summer long, here’s a great idea made out of flip flops!

If you want an interesting “real” wreath with a beach touch, I love this idea using a variety of succulents to make the wreath (and low maintenance) with a star fish in the center (idea from BHG.com).

If you’re a gardener you will love this idea, and you can paint the pots any color you wish to compliment your front door color!  Click here for instructions on making this wreath.

Clean the Entryway

The least fun but the first thing that should be done – clean the entryway!  Summertime on the east coast invites spiders, bees, and a myriad of beetles.  Power wash the walkway and siding to remove dirt, webs and nests.  If your trim is peeling, prep the wood (clean, sand, scrape), prime and paint.

Place a few container gardens or pots to soften the edges and bring your front door to life!  If you need some container garden ideas, check out these from RealSimple.com.  Enjoy your summer!
