In my Spring Decorating Magazine, we discussed the importance of customized window treatments.  If you are still unsure as to what you want to do with a given window, you may want to call in an expert to discuss your options.  Though you can page through ideas on sites such as Houzz.com and Pinterest.com; Hunter Douglas offers a service where they will come to your house and give a free assessment, click here for more information.

The Hunter Douglas’ website offers a list of things to consider when deciding on window treatments and offers a comprehensive explanation on each type of treatment such as, sheers, shades, honeycomb, blinds and shutters.  To go through their Starter Guide, click here.

Calico Corners offers a list of reasons as to why you should choose custom window treatments:

    1. Your custom window treatments will fit perfectly.
    2. Custom draperies are lush, not skimpy.
    3. Patterns are matched across seams.
    4. Custom draperies can be made to any size and length you want.
    5. Drapery linings make all the difference in the finished result.
    6. The little details make all the difference.

They offer a free in-home assessment service and also offer an online tool to help you get started, click here to view.

According to Elle Décor the following types of fabric are excellent choices for window treatments as they hang the best:  linen, silk, faux silk, and velvet.  If you’re concerned with keeping out the cold, use suede, velvet, tapestry, or tweed.  Keep in mind that faux silk doesn’t deteriorate as soon as real silk in sunny windows.

Once you decide on the type of window covering in a specific area you then have to decide on a color.  If you are unsure, go with a neutral color that will coordinate with anything and not fade as quickly in sunlight.  This will allow you to change anything in the room, and custom made window treatments will harmonize.
