How to Make your Home Cozy

by Debbie Correale

I love fall; it is my favorite season! As the weather cools and the evening light wanes, I think of flickering fireplaces, warm drinks, and how to make a home cozy. My favorite throw, which Oliver fights me over (and usually wins), is a white one I purchased from Marshalls that I love. Enjoy these ideas to add a cozy feel to your home in the spirit of the season!

Add warmth!

  • A lovely throw rug instantly creates an inviting conversation area and ties a room together. Click here for tips on purchasing the right rug for your space.
  • Bring in nature to instantly add life to a space and ground the room. You can easily do this by adding houseplants, a beautiful vase of seasonal flowers, or a bowl of seasonal fruits or vegetables.
  • Change out your lighter summer pillows and throws with heavier cold-weather ones. Play with adding layers and texture in your favorite fall colors!

Add a fresh paint color!

A fresh coat of paint and color choice can change the whole look and feel of a room. Choosing a warm paint color with a hint of yellow, red, orange, or brown can give you instant warmth. Have you ever walked into a room and felt cold? It was most likely in the cool color family (having a hint of green, purple, blue, or gray).

Add a fire!

Maybe you have an older home with a wood-burning fireplace that you no longer use; consider adding a fireplace candle holder. Warm up the look of your fireplace by using real or battery-powered candles. Or you can convert your wood-burning fireplace into a gas-burning one; click here to learn more.

Next, add your favorite warm drink. I love dark hot chocolate! What is your favorite warm fall drink when you kick back and relax? Enjoy the cozy feeling this fall!
