How to Move Large Furniture

Moving Heavy Furniture

As a professional home stager and interior decorator, I have moved a lot of furniture over the years! I was recently talking with a redesign client of mine who had purchased a new rug for her living room and was waiting for help to move her furniture to place it, which prompted me to write this post! You do not have to wait; you can do this yourself!

Rules for moving large and heavy furniture:

1. Protect your back.

I cannot stress how important it is to protect your back! You do not want an injury while trying to make your home beautiful.

Tips from WebMD

Lifting: Don’t lift objects that are too heavy for you. If you attempt to lift something, keep your back straight up and down, head up, and lift with your knees. Keep the object close to you, don’t stoop over to lift. Tighten your stomach muscles to keep your back in balance.

2. Protect your floor.

The best way to move heavy things is to slide them; do not try to lift them. Sliders are special pads made of materials that assist in moving furniture on top of carpet, tile, or wood floors. The key is placing a slider under each pressure point. Click here for a video on how to use sliders.

You can find sliders at your local home improvement retailer or purchase online. There are specially made sliders for carpeting, and wood flooring you can buy online:  Wood floor sliders or Carpet Sliders. Take your time and don’t be in a hurry and try to take short cuts.
