3 Tips to Add a Scandinavian Style

Scandinavian Style Living Room

If you were to step into a Scandinavian styled room, it might appear sparse to you. However, each piece in the room was chosen for a purpose or its beauty. The goal is not to fill the room; it is to simplify in use and comfort. If you feel the need to simplify your life, mindfully reduce stress, add Scandi-style to your home’s interior.

3 Tips to Get Started:

1. Declutter and Simplify

The emphasis in Scandinavian design is on using well-made furniture, such as a high-quality chair, that would be a statement piece in the room. Such as this Stressless Recliner from Dane Décor. You won’t see space-filling decorative elements. The room will show clean and simple lines free of clutter. Remove things that are not beautiful or serve a function.

2. Add Light

The easiest way to achieve more light is to change your paint color. In most Scandi-styled rooms, the wall and ceiling color is a neutral white or light gray. Use light-colored window coverings to maximize the amount of outside light that can fill the room. If you have dark wood flooring, add a light-colored throw rug. Use the appropriate number of light sources! Use three types of lighting: task, ambient, and accent. If you have overhead lights, add the ability to dim them. To easily enhance the amount of light in a room, add table and floor lamps. Use the warm glow of candles to add a cozy feel to the ambiance of the room.

3. Add Layers

In this neutral theme, use black as a contrast color to add depth to the room; for example, black picture frames. Using layers of texture is another way to add to the feeling of comfort. In a Scandi-style room, you will see woolen throws, soft blankets, and fluffy cushions.

The Danish have a term for this simplified life-style, Hygge, where the emphasis is on comfort, warmth, good food, and drink with friends and family. As we head into cold weather here on the east coast, that sounds like a fantastic way to live!
