Fall Home Projects: Add Outdoor Lighting

by Debbie Correale

As we head into fall and the sun begins to set earlier, it may be time to revisit your outdoor lighting. If you or your guests are struggling to see in the dark, it may be time for an outdoor lighting update! Clean up your outdoor lamps and sconce lights, replace the light bulbs to an energy-saving LED bulb, and determine if you need to replace them.

When considering your lighting plan, I would recommend creating a master plan of what you would like to see on your property. Create a drawing of your property; it doesn’t have to be exact, including the features of your home, deck, paths, etc. From there, decide where you need and would like more light. You may not complete the project in its entirety at one time; however, by having a plan, you can complete aspects of the project over time. Also, you are not looking to be a beacon seen from space, be mindful of your neighbors, and add the necessary light.

3 reasons to add light around the outside of your house:

  • For security and safety,
  • Focal points and
  • For ambiance to offer a feeling to your outdoor space.

Once you have completed the drawing and your plan, determine what is DIY, and what you can complete in a weekend or if you need to call in an outdoor lighting contractor.

Lighting Options

For safety and security add light to a driveway or walkway with LED lights using Path lights that can be solar-powered or wired.

Add a spotlight, or floodlight to create a focal point in your yard, deck, or patio area. This lighting type can be used to highlight a beautiful tree, a wall, or an architectural feature.

Add light caps to your deck posts and lights to your stairs for safety.
