Fall Home Projects: 5 Tips to Refresh Outdoor Containers

Fall Container Gardening

September can be a challenge on the east coast for outdoor containers. By now, a few plants survived the summer heat, and others have served their term and appear sad. This fall home project is quick and easy to complete just in time for weekend entertaining and relaxation, my favorite kind of project!

5 tips to refresh your outdoor containers and pots:

#1 Remove the dying plants and any debris that has collected in the container. Don’t pull them out of the pot as the surrounding plants, that you want to keep, may have roots intertwined. Carefully cut out the dead plants.

#2 For the pots that have retained the one plant that is tall and offers the height you want, add seasonal flowers. This time of year, you can find hearty Pansies, Coneflowers, Black-eyed Susan, and Mums (Chrysanthemums) of many heights and colors. If you need height, there are several types of ornamental grass available at your local garden center. Other greenery options include cabbage, kale, or draping ivy.

#3 Fill empty spots with garden whimsies. A colorful ceramic bird, birdhouse, or garden gnome and when you are ready, fill in with pumpkins and gourds of various colors.

#4 Use cuttings from attractive evergreens and long branches to create height and add seasonal colors to your containers.

#5 Add silk leaves, dried natural elements, Eucalyptus, grasses, or preserved Boxwood to fill in and add height. Visit your local craft store for these items.

Have fun with this and enjoy the cooler evenings outdoor. Get that fire pit ready for entertaining and S’more making!
