Home Interior Decorating Kitchen Remodel: Choosing a Backsplash

Kitchen Remodel: Choosing a Backsplash

by Debbie Correale

In the 2019 U.S. Houzz Kitchen Trends Study when a homeowner decided to remodel their kitchen, 87% replaced their backsplash.  Of those surveyed, the number #1 color choice was white, then multi-colored, and last is gray. The #1 material choice is ceramic or porcelain tile, followed by natural stone. All of that is interesting, should it impact your decisions? Frankly, I would say do what works for you in your kitchen! If you plan to live in your home for a while and want a renovated kitchen, you should have the kitchen of your dreams! Let’s review the types of materials used for kitchen backsplashes:

Tile:  Ceramic, porcelain, glass, natural stone, marble, quartzite

Sheet:  Stainless steel, laminate, wood, natural stone

Questions to consider before making a material choice:

  • Do you want something easy to clean?
  • Are you a messy cook?
  • Are you ok with the look of grout lines?

If you are looking for easy to care options:

Depending on how you answer those questions will determine the type of material you will want to use on your kitchen backsplash. Ceramic, porcelain, and glass tile are all resistant to heat and moisture and are easy to clean.

Back painted glass offers an affordable, sleek and modern, easy to clean backsplash that can be glossy or matte depending on your aesthetic.

Tile comes in a wide range of cost. Depending on the material, pattern, and where you order it from can affect the price. I know you are familiar with the “subway tile” tile look that is featured in farmhouse style homes, and a huge go-to for Joanna Gaine’s HGTV Fixer Upper remodels. However, there’s a world of options available!

If you like the look of marble, you can use a marble tile.

Looking for a pattern that is a bit different, not crazy, try herringbone.

You cannot beat the affordability of a 4×4 tile. By placing the tile, not in alignment, you can add an interesting look to your backsplash.

Keep in mind there are many ways you can use pattern in your backsplash, and still use an affordable tile, for non-traditional ideas click here.
