The New Year is an exciting time as it resonates with everyone differently, for me, it’s time to look at my home with a fresh perspective. I go through the exercise of walking my house, and I consider what I would change and what could I remove? If you go through this process, ask yourself, “What is the thing that bothers me the most?”

Clutter drives me nuts, and I always think of the New Year as a fantastic time to think about my organizational systems and how they are working with my household. Though I am not a professional organizer, I do like to be organized and realize that a well-decorated home is clutter-free! These are the three steps I follow and recommend to solve any clutter situations you may be experiencing:

  1. Start with something you can complete in one day.
  2. Remove the things you are discarding that day.
  3. Choose a different organizational system, so the clutter scenario does not happen again.

Common clutter areas that you can take action to solve today:

Mail

Set up a convenient area where you plan to process the mail, and have everything available to you. Place the recycle material in the recycle bin, place your shredder by this area and have a box or file folder system for each category of mail:  bills to pay, things to read, coupons to keep. Plan on one day each week, two weeks, or month that you go through these files and take action on them or recycle, shred, and discard. If you receive many pre-approved credit card applications and want them to stop, click here to read a fantastic article on how to stop them and other things to consider. Pottery Barn has a build your own “Daily System” where you can design an organizer, click here to learn more. Ikea offers many simple and sleek organizing solutions from pretty boxes to things you can hang, see your options here.

Shoes

If you live in a small space or an older home you may not have a mudroom. You may dream of one, and want to construct an area, in the meantime how to solve the issue of shoes piling up at the door of your home? To corral shoes when people enter the house, place a boot tray along the wall and encourage family members to use that to store their shoes. Or use a small hallway table, lining the shoes up under the table, offers an organized appearance. This boot tray sold at Ballard Designs is practical and attractive.

Electronics

I know counter space is often at a premium; however, having a centralized and organized charging area is a great way to collect, store, and charge your electronics. You won’t be running around the house late for work because you can’t find your phone! I found this compact organizer on Amazon, and it comes in a variety of colors and can be monogrammed.
