Home Interior Decorating 3 Steps to a New Bedroom Look

3 Steps to a New Bedroom Look

Bedroom Layers

Last week my decorating article discussed taking advantage of the January Whites Sales to update your bedroom’s linens. This week I would like to focus on three ways that you can easily create a new bedroom look:

1. Add Artwork

Choosing artwork can often be intimidating, or I find clients only want to fill a space. Understanding the proper size and selecting a piece that reflects your interests are important. My suggestion is to know how big a piece you need, take into account if the artwork will need to be framed as that will add further dimension. Keep in mind custom framing can be quite expensive and there are many ready-made frames available, have sizing in mind when you begin shopping.

It is imperative to create your furniture arrangement first, then add artwork and finish with accessorizing. I find people like to center a piece of artwork in the center of the wall space, which sounds practical. However, art should be hung, so it aesthetically ties into what it hangs over.

How to find affordable art sources:

Society 6 – Quirky and unusual artwork.
Art.com – Prints from your favorite artists.
Minted – Offers artwork from independent artists and a styling service if you are unsure of what you are looking for in a piece.
Etsy – If you would like a customized sign, or choose from many wall hangings, and unique hand-crafted items.
Zatista and Saatchi Art – Offer original artwork where you search based on price range and size.
Artfinder – Offers original artwork.
Ikea – Offers large and over-sized pieces.
iCanvas – Pick from existing artwork or create your own and decide the size.

2. Add dimension in Layers

2018 is the year of warm and comfortable according to Amy Astley, editor-in-chief of Architectural Digest. To add a unique look to your bedroom without changing the comforter or duvet is to add layers on top. These are the layers and their respective order:

  1. Sheets – bottom sheet, top sheet
  2. Blanket or thin cover
  3. Pillows, European Shams (26×26), decorative pillows
  4. Comforter / Duvet
  5. Throw

3. Add a Pop Color

Complete the look with a lovely  chair in a pop of color that ties into your decorative bed pillows, or a bench at the foot of the bed.
