Get a New Look and Decorate with a Rug

Decorate with a Rug

One of the most frequently asked questions that I receive during a redesign consultation has to do with choosing a rug for a given room. What color, what size, what works with the furniture, all of these are elements to take into consideration when looking for a rug. Let me offer five tips, and then I will provide you with some ideas and inspiration. Personally, I like to choose a rug after the furniture is placed!

Tips on adding and decorating with an area rug:

  1. Get the right sized rug. Too often I go into a home, and the homeowner loves a rug they got that is 5’x7’, and they are trying to use it in a room that is 16’x18’. You want to use a rug that creates a conversation area. In a living room, for example, the front legs of the large pieces of furniture (couch, big chairs) should all be on the carpet. 2. Layering rugs is a fantastic way to add flair to a room. If you have plain colored wall-to-wall carpet, or perhaps it’s old, and you are unable to replace it, consider a beautiful area rug over the top!
  3. What wear and tear will the carpet get? If you have kids, pets, the potential for spilling and stains is high, you will want to purchase a rug constructed of a material that is easily spot-cleaned. Click here to learn about different rug materials.
  4. If you already have a beautiful fun rug use it for the inspiration and focal point in your room!
  5. If you have older furniture and want to modernize a room, find a great modern rug and repeat its theme and colors with accessories.

Ideas for a new rug:

Don’t be afraid to use color!

If you want cozy and comfortable add a rug with a high pile. Keep in mind that may not be a long-lasting or sturdy rug to use in a high-traffic area, assess your use pattern before making this decision. To learn about rug pile heights, click here.

If you have neutral colors on your walls and furniture add some pizzazz in a fun geometric shape.

Don’t be afraid to mix colors and patterns, have some fun. If you stick with colors and patterns that you love and have a general theme, such as in this photo red, blue, and gray tones, it can blend beautifully.
