Bathroom Trends and Inspiration

by Debbie Correale

BathroomAre you dealing with an old bathroom? Often I find people tolerating an unpleasant bathroom for years and then remodel it before selling it without gaining any benefits from a new bathroom. Why wait? There is planning to do before you do any project, why not go through the steps and assess your situation at least you will be making an informed decision.

Bathroom Remodel Plan:

  1. What is your goal? When answering this question consider things such as how long you plan to stay in your house and if there are any special requirements necessary to incorporate into the goal.
  2. Define Your Budget. Home Advisor offers a budget planning tool for your area and the type of work you want to complete, click here to review.
  3. Decide if you will hire a professional contractor, contract out portions of the project, or if it’s a complete DIY project.
  4. Come up with a plan, choose your features, materials, and colors. For a printable copy of a bath planner from the National Kitchen & Bath Association, click here. For an online virtual planner, click here. Focus on your personal lifestyle. According to the Houzz, mobile device usage is up 58% in the bathroom. If you can relate to this statistic, you will want to make the proper accommodations for lighting, power, storage, etc.

Let’s review some trends. In the Houzz Bath Trends survey done in 2016, the majority of the bath styles were traditional (30%) and no particular style (42%) and were updated to Contemporary (27%), Modern (17%), Transitional (16%), Traditional (14%). Regarding wall and cabinet color, Whites and Gray reigned supreme. If you were thinking of selling your home in the next year or two I would recommend going with the trends; otherwise, go with the color palette that will last the test of time, your tastes, and most of all make you happy.

  • At the 2017 International Builder’s Show, Daltile was the winner of Best in Bath Product for it’s Marble Attache line offering the beauty of the marble look on practical porcelain tile.
  • The way of the future is touchless and environmentally friendly. Check out these touchless toilets and faucets from Kohler or Juno Showers.
  • Check out my Pinterest Board for some ideas and inspiration and start creating your dream bath!
  • For the DIYer: Home Depot labels a job of installing porcelain tile as an “intermediate” project involving 5-7 days. Consider this information in your project. If you are unsure how many tiles you will need, measure the space you intend to tile and use this Tile Calculator.
