Many of the newer homes have wood flooring and great rooms. That open floor space is highly appealing with its light, airy feel and openness. The decorating challenge is that people add their furniture and accessories, and still, their home does not feel finished. A rug pulls a room together and anchors it to a particular purpose. Rugs add that comfortable feel that is often lacking in a home with all wood flooring; they also cut down on the sound in the house.
You are not limited to using rugs only over wood or tiled floors. Layering rugs, for example, a throw rug over wall-to-wall carpeting, offers visual interest and can also be used to define a purpose in a room. An appropriately sized rug is essential; you do not have to have all your furniture on the carpet; however, you will want it partially on the rug. If you have children, animals, or very messy adults, consider a rug you can spot-clean. Polyester, nylon, or polypropylene (indoor-outdoor) materials offer the best options for spot-cleaning and are generally the least expensive.
