How do I deal with my long narrow room?

I’ve worked with many different types, sizes, and arranged homes and one of the most common problems are bowling alley rooms and homeowners rarely knowing how to deal with them. Often they will keep all of one area together and not know what to do with the in-between area. A long and narrow room needs to be broken up into two functional areas serving purposes of their own. I would not create a “wall” between them as it will feel closed off; instead, you can use see-through screens, plants and group furniture based on purpose. For example, one end of the room could be arranged with comfortable seating, lighting, and TV watching. Next to that could be a game area for kids with decorative storage for games and toys.

I have the opposite of a green finger, what kind of plant can I grow?

PothosOne of the easiest is a pothos. As it grows, you can easily cut off what you don’t want and maintain the preferred size. It thrives in many different rooms with various light and temperatures! If you are looking for a small table plant, consider an English Ivy. Super easy to care for, it won’t grow large and bushy, and you can trim to maintain to your preferred size. Another idea that adds interest is an air plant. Have you seen the lovely hanging or table terrariums? Click here to learn how to care for air plants.

How can I choose colors that will work with my décor?

Have you ever had the experience where you purchase a pillow or throw with the color (or colors) you love only to get it home and discover it doesn’t quite work with your décor? Understanding the Color Wheel and how colors work together is the place to start. For a fabulous explanation of the Color Wheel, click here to view a video from BHG. After seeing the video, you will have a better understanding of how colors work with each other in a harmonious way or in a complementary way to create a dynamic look.

What size rug should I get and how should I place it?

This topic is one I often hear from clients who either don’t know what type, color or size throw rug they should purchase for a given space. The first question to answer is, “What is the purpose of the throw rug?” The answer will determine the size. Throw rugs add comfort to wood flooring, tie together a sitting area, and often it can complete the decorative style. If you are unsure, you can always measure off and tape (using removable painter’s tape), an outline on the floor, to see how the proposed rug will work.
