Organize Your Garage or Shed

by Debbie Correale

GarageIs your shed or garage summertime ready? From gardening tools to toys do you have a place for everything? Too often, the areas of the home that are not “lived” in have a tendency to be ignored yet there are many fantastic ideas out there to help you with this task.

The first step in organizing your space is to come up with a plan:

  1. What categories of things do you need to store? Separate everything into these categories and place them together.
  2. Determine how much space you will need to organize the items nicely and write out a plan.
  3. Be sure to give away, throw away or sell any old items that are no longer used. If you still have all of your kids hockey things or basketball shoes from 3rd grade, and they’re in high school, it may be time for some serious purging! Also, be sure to clean out your garage or shed with a good sweeping.

Organize your space for maximum use and storage! Here are three ways you can accomplish this:

Use your vertical space. I love this idea where PVC piping is used to hold unwieldy gardening tools. Click here for step-by-step instructions. If you want to be organized and don’t want to have to make a system, consider the Rubbermaid FastTrack Organization System. It can be purchased at your favorite home store, and you can get only those items that you need. Click here for a video on how the system works.

Make it portable. Depending on the types of tools you are storing, having the opportunity to make them portable so they can move with you when working on projects is a huge benefit. By using this system, tools are always returned to their spot after use. That is the key to staying organized when items always have their place and are returned after use. Label Everything. If you are using bins be sure to label each one and have the container available at the height required for your kids. Labels will help you and your family maintain the organization.  Have a rotating system where the seasonal items that are not being used during the current season are located high in the system and keep in mind that sleds and bikes can be hung from the ceiling.

Once you have everything in its place, you will feel great about the space and hopefully your family will stop bothering you if they can’t find something! For further ingenious ideas on garage and shed storage, I created a board on Pinterest for your viewing enjoyment, click here to enjoy!
