Time for a bathroom makeover?

by Debbie Correale

Are you planning on entertaining or having overnight guests this upcoming holiday season?  If so, you may want to consider a guest bathroom makeover.  If your bathroom is timeworn, you may want to consider a complete renovation.  However, if you don’t have the funds or time to take on that project you can transform your bathroom by doing three things:  change the paint, lighting and accessorizes.

Let’s start with some inspiration!  There are so many options out there that it can be difficult to narrow down, so you have to decide what feels right for you.  Lowe’s offers a tool to help you with this makeover, click here to review.  I created an Idea Book on Houzz for you to get some great ideas on adding storage or flare to your bathroom, click here to review those pictures.  Click here for the finalists in the National Kitchen and Bath Association’s 2014 competition also a great place to get some ideas.

Paint

Guest bathrooms are small and can be painted in a couple of days.  A fresh paint color can instantly change and update the look and feel of your guest bathroom.  Here are some inspiration sources for you to review, click on the link below and have some fun!

To add an extra customized look consider adding a wall decal.  The nice aspect of this idea is that it isn’t permanent and can be reused.  Any place that sells wallpaper will offer wall decals, but you can purchase online at sources such as Trading Phrases or customize your message at Right On The Walls.

Lighting

A new light fixture, or a color change of an existing light can completely change the look and feel.  Bob Vila offers instruction on painting a builder-installed brass light fixture, click here to review.  I love the idea of adding real chandeliers into a bathroom, or consider adding a lamp that would fit the scale of the room.  Peruse these ideas from Lowes to see the many options available.

Accessories

One of my favorite areas of decorating … accessories!  You can change out your shower curtain (replace the liner at the same time), throw rugs and towels and completely update your bathroom.  If you are pinched for time and not able to paint, this is the way to go!  If you want to transform the room completely, consider replacing all the hardware in the room.  Click here to review an online source, Faucets Direct, for various ideas.  If you are unsure how complicated that the project is, click here for a brief video explaining the process, it doesn’t look too bad!  Consider replacing your cabinet hardware, click here for some ideas from Knob Deals.

Other Ideas if you have the time and funds, consider replacing your flooring.  Tile seems to be the go-to option; however, you will be surprised with the faux wood look that the very durable and water-resistant luxury vinyl offers.  The Armstrong website provides an excellent tool that allows you to choose various floor colors with bathroom paint colors.  Click here to use the tool; I love being able to visualize the result!
