Is Your Home Driving You Nuts

Do you find yourself tired of a room and not sure what to do to change it? In an ideal world, we would get rid of everything and start fresh, right? Unfortunately, that’s rarely the case, and we have to work with what we have. You would be amazed at what you can do with what you already own and a few tweaks. Let’s figure this out.

What don’t you like?

What is the one thing in your room or home that you love that brings a smile to your face? The things we love offer us inspiration. Let’s say it’s a rug, a beautiful pillow, a cherished vase or piece of art. How can we draw from that and carry that feeling of “love” into a room?

Pick a theme

Choose a color and material combination that you like. For example, if you love the look of metallic, why not pair your favorite metallic with a color you like, then sprinkle that look in the pillows, throws, candles, vases throughout the room. As in this stunning bedroom where gold metallic and black offer a completed look:

Look at What you Own Differently

Can you take what you own and modify it to look completely different? For example in my article, Desk Transformation, I took a timeworn dark wood desk, had it cut down and painted to fit into a new space. Another example detailed in, How to Transform Old Furniture, I took my old mahogany bedroom furniture and had it painted with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint to give the room an entirely fresh and new look.

Find the Perfect Rug

Nothing ties a room together quicker than the right rug and the correctly sized rug. That is usually the issue I have found with clients; they don’t realize how big a rug should be. Review my decorating article on How to Buy the Right Rug for more information on this topic. I believe this comes down to what you like. Houzz offers an excellent guide for matching furniture to rug styles, click here to view. However, you can mix styles if you maintain a theme or a way to tie all the design elements together.

Paint the Walls

A fresh coat of paint can completely offer you a new look and is a good start to any redesign. What color to choose? If you are unsure and want something that will go with anything, “greige” may be your best option. Greige is a warm combination of gray and beige and the spectrum in that range can go from light tan to dark gray. You will want to try the paint in your room, with your lighting before making a choice. A few paints that have been popular are:

Benjamin Moore 2137-60 Gray Owl:

Benjamin Moore 11548 Classic Gray

Benjamin Moore HC-172 Revere Pewter

Sherwin Williams Kestrel White SW 7516

I know the DIYer loves to take on these projects; however, if you find yourself stuck, something just doesn’t feel right, give me a call 610.955.8202 or email for a color consultation. In an hour or two I can help answer your questions and coordinate wall, flooring, fabric, furniture, and accessories for a perfect look.
