Add a Fresh Look with Pillows

Decorating with PillowsAt the beginning of this Spring season, I find myself motivated for a new project. In my case, that usually means a room makeover or redesign. A redesign may sound like a lot of work and time, have no fear my decorating friends this is the easiest way to make a big impact in a room. How? Pillows! Here is my 3-step process:

Step #1:  Find Inspiration

In every room, you need a source of inspiration that thing that you love. It may be a piece of art, a beautiful vase or accessory, rug, or your furniture. If there is nothing in a room that you love, find inspiration in other areas, like magazines, online, or check out my Houzz Ideabook for ideas.

Step #2:  Decide on your Decorating Goal

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Are you looking to compliment an existing look?
  • Are you looking to WOW your guests?
  • Are you looking to hide a piece of furniture?
  • Are you looking to resurrect an old chair or worn fabric?

Once you have determined what you like (found your inspiration) and you understand your decorating goal, it’s time to find your pillows.

Step #3:  Find Your Pillows

Fortunately, there are several shopping options available for finding your perfect pillow combination.

Easy Pillow-Mixing Rules

If mixing patterns in pillows causes you stress, pick a neutral background color (white, beige, gray, light blue, light pink) and be sure all the pillows you choose have this same color as a neutral and the pop color that you are trying to add. You always want to add pillows in odd numbers – therefore an 84” standard sized couch should have a minimum of three pillows to five. Keep in mind, if pillows share the same style, for example, all modern with geometric themed fabric, you can easily mix them. Pillows with different texture may be put together if they are in various shades of one color. You can add a leather or fur pillow to transition from one pillow look to another.

Decorating with Pillows

Pillow MagicLooking for a quick room transformation that will not take planning and can be completed in a few hours? Think pillows! They can be magical and take a room from ho-hum to vibrant and exciting! For some inspiration on past room redesigns that I have done, I have put together a project on Houzz with several rooms that were transformed with pillows, click here to view.

Before you head out shopping, take an inventory of what you already own. If you have a lovely colored throw that you would like to incorporate into your room but don’t feel that it matches, coordinating pillows can add the balance! Decide on the pop color or colors that you want to add to your room. Many home stores have various options available such as Pier 1, Target, or Pottery Barn. If you are a DIY type, you may run to your local fabric store and make pillow coverings (using the pillow inserts you already own.) For an easy tutorial on making pillow covers, click here. Don’t be afraid to mix and match colors or textures, in fact; I encourage you to!
