5 Reasons to Sign Up for the Redesign Right Program

StudentsHave you reached a point in your life where you are now ready to do something for yourself? Are you eager to start making money at something that you love? I have offered a successful Interior Redesign and Home Staging Training program for close to 15 years now. In that time, I’ve heard all the reasons why someone wants to take a training program, and their hesitations. If you are someone who has tossed around the idea that you would like to pursue a career in interior decorating, let me address some concerns you may have.

5 Reasons why you should sign up for the Redesign Right Training Program:

  1. The class size is capped at six students; each person is guaranteed personalized training and hands-on experience. In other words, you are not watching with a group of 25 students as one person is the only one with a hands-on activity.
  2. In each 5-day course, there is classroom training, learning techniques of the trade, working with real fabric swatches, paint chips, and accessories and working onsite, redesigning three local client homes.
  3. As a ten-time award winning interior redesigner, home stager, and trainer, running a successful Interior Redesign and Home Staging business with over 15 years experience I have a proven track record as a professional in this field which places me in a perfect spot to be your mentor.
  4. You will walk away from the 5-day class understanding how to get started and be a successful business owner. What does that entail? You will learn how to market yourself and work with potential clients and find out how to ask for the money that you deserve. Remember, because you have a natural talent that comes easily to you does not mean that you should not charge, it means you should be making money doing what you love to do!
  5. As the owner of Redesign Right, I do all of the training and working with you during the class. I am available to you to ask questions long after the class is over.

Isn’t it your time to shine? Perhaps your kids have moved on, or you want to make money at something that you enjoy, or you are simply tired of the same job you have done for years and need a creative job that offers you the opportunity to earn a living. Whatever your personal situation is at this time, I guarantee that the Redesign Right Program can fulfill your requirements. Take a step, give me a call 610.955.8202 if you have any questions about the program. I would love to have you join us! Click here to view the upcoming training schedule. 3 Interior Decorating Ideas in January

Interior Decorating in JanuaryIt’s that time of year on the East Coast where we hunker down and brace ourselves for the “real” winter, or we head south! To help inspire you and get your creative home decorating ideas flowing I wanted to offer some great home decorating things to do in the month of January.

Organize

Don’t you love those photos of organized homes where they depict three items neatly hung on hooks? They portray this look as if we too could be this organized. The issue is that we have a lot more than three items to worry about, and that is really at the core of what needs to be addressed. To organize a space, you first have to remove things. Too often this is a daunting task. My suggestion is to take one issue area that you are struggling with, may it be your paperwork, or toys, or shoes. As Marie Kondo says in her book, “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” tidy by category. Solve the organization issues category by category, in this way; you are ultimately organizing one group of things at a time. For further decluttering tips inspired by Kondo’s book, click here.

Brighten Your Surroundings

Though we are inspired to be cozy and warm during this time, we still have the opportunity to brighten our surroundings. Add plants to any room to bring a bright green, Pantone’s 2017 Color of the Year, and life to any space. If you are unsure what plants work in a low-light situation, click here for some tips from BHG.

If you have soft or muted light, you may want to update your bulbs and use an energy efficient LED white light bulb. For an in-depth lighting planning guide from HGTV, click here.

January is the Month of Linen Sales

You can go to any home store, and you will notice that all bedding, linens, and towels are on sale. It is an excellent time to replace a duvet or pick up a fresh set of towels for your bath. You can give a guest bathroom a mini-makeover by only adding a new throw rug and towels. Finish the look with a plant and your new look will be complete!

Do It Yourself Home Projects, You Can Do!

Happy Woman standing againtst wall with roller brush.Do you enjoy do it yourself projects? I will have to admit that I like and require change. I enjoy changing my home decorations and have had a long history of moving furniture and transforming rooms into whole new looks … you should ask my kids! The change of seasons always prompts change for me so I wanted to pass along five fabulous ideas that you can use this weekend for a quick room transformation!

1.  Washi Tape for a Wall
If you want to change the look of a room yet you are not sure if you wish to paint or use wallpaper, consider Washi Tape. It is a long-lasting, affordable alternative. It comes in a variety of colors and patterns, and you can apply it to your walls in various ways to create diamond or geometric patterns. A feature of this idea is that it peels off when you are ready for your next change! Check out the many options available online at Etsy.com and OrientalTrading.com. To view ideas get inspired, click here.

2.  Peel-and-Stick Wood for a Wall
Love the idea of barn wood chic yet live in a newly constructed home? You can achieve this look on a wall with a product from Stikwood, which creates planks with strong peel-and-stick tape that fastens to the wall. Click here to view the products from Stikwood.

3.  Overlays for Furniture, Mirrors, Anything
Transform any piece into an original! Are you bored with a dresser, mirror, or side table and ready for a change? Consider turning it into a piece where your friends will be aghast over the uniqueness. The sky is the limit with these lightweight decorative fretwork panels that you can purchase from O’verlays, click here to view the options.

4.  Add Paneling to a Ceiling or Wall
I love the cottage style look and the feel of a Cape Cod as it is reminiscent of my youth visiting the shore. If you like this look, consider running wood paneling horizontally and painting it white, or purchasing white paneling, to offer that cottage-style in your home! You can buy options at your favorite home store, such as Home Depot, click here to view. If you would like instructions on how to install paneling, click here for a link from eHow.

5.  Add Custom Artwork
Do you have beautiful artwork that your kids or a loved one made stored somewhere in a box? Consider taking out your favorites and scanning them into your computer and uploading them to a site such as EasyCanvasPrints.com where they take your uploaded file and create a canvas based on your requirements. Showcase multiple pieces in an entryway or above a side table.

While writing this post, I discovered a company, Spoonflower.com, which will take your artwork and transform it into fabric! How fabulous is that! After uploading your image to create the customized material you can use it to create lovely throw pillows for your couch or chairs. For instructions on easy to sew pillows from HGTV, click here.

Tribute to the Original “redesigner” My Mom

debbie-sisters-momAs many of you know my mom passed away in November at the incredible age of 92. She was the original redesigner! She had five daughters and lived on a tight budget and was always creating and changing our environment. She went to art and design school which was a great privilege in her day. She was an artist, designer, seamstress and a fabulous cook. She was one of the most creative people always thinking and creating in her mind the next “home project.”

I was fortunate to grow up around all this talent, and the majority of the art in our home was her original work. As the best story-teller around, she was full of life, funny and enjoyed a good laugh with friends and family.

As an innovator and trend-setter, you never knew what she was going to do! One day when I came home from school I found the entire kitchen walls covered in masking tape and newspapers. When I asked my mom what she was about to do she smiled and said she was tired of her refrigerator color and was about to spray paint it pink the new color of the year! She had seen it in a magazine, can you imagine? Everyone, particularly my dad, was surprised when they came home! To this day, we still remember the pink spray paint that seeped into all the cabinets all over the dishes and pans!

Another day I recall coming home from school, I had gotten a snack and headed into the den to watch a little TV (back in the days when you had five channels to choose from.) I could hear my mom yelling from another room asking me, “What do you think of the den?” When I walked in I saw that while I was at school she had painted the den an exquisite orange red. She was ahead of her time as no one painted their walls red during this period!

I am grateful and forever blessed with all of the many talents that I had the opportunity to be influenced by and I can honestly say that my love for the interior redesign and home staging business can all be attributed to my very funny and creative mom! Always full of life, love and surprises – I miss you, mom!

Perhaps these stories have inspired you to take some chances in your home and tackle that project that maybe is a reach for you. It’s okay to take some risks, after all, there’s always a can of paint out there to cover it all up! Happy decorating!

5 Quick Decorating Ideas to Brighten Your Home

iStock_000020310504SmallDo you have areas of your home that you are not happy with or would like to change? If you are looking for some quick change ups as we enter spring but you don’t have the time to repaint, or remove that old wallpaper, consider one of these five decorating ideas to brighten your house quickly:

  1. Add a new pillow to an old couch or chair. Choose a color that pops and complements your environment. For example, if you have a predominantly brown room select a color you love such as orange, bright green or yellow. Scatter that new color around the room in accessories such as a throw, pillows, and candle color or vase color.
  2. If you’re tired of your lamps, consider painting them, even if your lamps are brass. By preparing the lamp you can end up with a beautiful new look. To cover a brass or metal lamp consider using a primer such as Rust-Oleum’s Clean Metal Primer and then Rust-Oleum’s Protective Spray Enamel in your desired color and finish. Remember to update your lampshades as well! Note, if you are starting with an old brass lamp, you should clean it thoroughly by using vinegar and a soft cloth.
  3. Nothing says springtime more than a vase of tulips! Add an instant pop of color by adding inexpensive grocery store flowers in your living space.
  4. If you have old wallpaper that you are tired of, consider covering it with a gallery wall displaying family photos or artwork that brings you joy. Be sure to tie this look together by using picture frames of the same color, which you can achieve with the appropriate color of spray paint. By covering the wall with things you love you instantly will feel better about the space.
  5. If you have a dull area, an empty foyer, or area that needs some new life consider a houseplant! If you need help picking a houseplant click here.

10 Creative Ideas to Decorate your Bookcase, Cabinet or Shelves

House June 042-resizedToo often I have found when helping someone with their home decorating and redesign; they clutter their bookcases and shelves.  It’s a flat surface that seems to collect everything.  If you can, step back, and look at your bookcases, shelves, or cabinet – What do you see?  If you see a cluttered mess, it may be time to consider a new approach!  Consider one of these 10 creative ideas:

  1. Add Mirrors to the back of built-in shelving to give the wall depth.  Especially great idea for a small room or a room that may need more light.
  2. Add a Graphic Print:  Using a herringbone or chevron print to the backs of a unit can add quite a “wow” factor to your room. This look can be achieved even if you are in an apartment by using removable self-adhesive wallpaper, click here for some beautiful examples from Betapet.
  3. Multi-Purpose Shelving:  If you have a bookshelf that you can change up the format of the shelving unit you could potentially vary the height of the shelves creating openings larger than others. In that space, you could display artwork or treasured items, or it could serve as an area to hold special glasses and a bar area.  To create a bar look, install stemware holders, to hang your glasses.
  4. Color Coordinate:  Could you imagine if you put all of your books together that were similarly colored in piles how impressive that display could look?
  5. To add interest vary the height of the items that you are using to decorate.
  6. Stack books for interest, as well as using them to raise smaller items so that they don’t get lost in the display.
  7. If you want to accentuate certain elements, adopt the “less is more” approach.  Leaving open space allows the eye to see the art piece.
  8. Create a photo gallery using similarly colored frames.
  9. Use a paint color on the inside of the shelf that is a few shades darker than the room.
  10. Group small collectibles such as shells in beautiful glass jars, vases, containers of any sort and use as a feature.

2015 Decorating Ideas and Trends

shutterstock_241432237January is a great month here on the east coast as it allows us time to think about all the decorating projects we want to complete in this New Year.  It is also an exceptional month to purchase bedding and linens as the best White Sales you will find are available now according to Consumer Reports.  Let’s look at the design trends that you may want to consider in your planning stage for home decorating in 2015.

Let’s start with the color trends in 2015.  On the runway, we saw color shades coming back reminiscent of the 60s; such as, olive and orange so you will be seeing these colors available in decorating items.  As reported in last week’s post we, know that Pantone picked Marsala 18-1438 as their color of the year, Sherwin-Williams selected Coral Reef SW 6606, and Benjamin Moore chose Guilford Green HC-116.  All of this will translate into some unusual combinations at your favorite home product store, and I can’t wait to go shopping!

According to the Zillow Digs design team, click here for their press release, the top five design trends for 2015 are:

  1. Gold fixtures
  2. Cowhide
  3. Wallpaper
  4. Blue Accent Colors
  5. Modern to mid-century modern elements

With these great design trends in mind and some splendid ideas on your part, what’s the next step?

Put your plan on paper.  Too often when working with clients I find that they don’t know where to start with a project or how to wrap their mind around the steps.  Go through the process and think about what you want to accomplish in your project or renovation and put these details in writing.  Too often people will brain storm on ideas and desires, and the thoughts are never written down and forgotten or not organized properly.  Here is a recommended list of steps to follow before you embark on a new and sizeable project:

  • Detail the project goal.
  • Define your desired style.
  • Describe a color scheme:  what colors do you like and want to use in your project.
  • Establish what you have to work with such as, artwork or furniture.  Do you have any inspirational pieces of furniture, or a lovely piece of art that you would like to showcase in this new project?  I find if you can hone your vision to the one thing you love the rest of the project pieces can easily be defined.

What is a redesign and why do I need one?

Welcome to October and this beautiful Fall Season!  Being from New England, I love the changing of the leaves and all the vibrant colors that surround us.  As we embrace Fall and start to think about the holiday season, guests and entertaining do any of these statements resonate with you?

  • I have relatives coming soon I have to get this house pulled together!
  • I can’t stand my guest room.  It has become the dumping ground of all things that we want to keep and don’t know what to do with, I have to get it organized!
  • My paint is over 10 years old, I’ve got to do something but I don’t know what and I can’t choose a color, I have no idea where to start.
  • I have some beautiful things from my grandparents, sitting in storage, and I would really like to incorporate the items into my living space but I don’t know how.

If you find yourself thinking about any one of these topics I have the solution for you!  A redesign!  Now you might be asking yourself, “What is a redesign?”  Let me explain …

Redesign Collage

What is a redesign?

First, we would schedule a one-to-one consultation.  This is where I meet you and your home. During this time, we would go over some of the challenges within your home.  After learning about your lifestyle, tastes, hopes and dreams; I would find out how you use your space and how you would like to use it.  Working within your budget and time frame and using what you own, I can help establish a strong foundation that flows with the proper accessories that create pop and excitement.  By integrating your treasured items into the décor, I can help preserve individuality and reflect your personality.  By keeping within your budget, using what you already own and love, I can transform a space from one that is dull and uninteresting to an area that you will fall in love with again all in one day!

What’s involved in a Paint Color Consultation?

As part of the initial consultation if you wish to decide on a paint color, I can help you imagine and create the perfect paint palette for your entire home using over 8,000 paint swatches, which I will help you narrow down to two or three samples to choose from.  The color of the paint in a room has a powerful and direct physical effect on people.  Many people are color sensitive and do not realize the impact color has on them.  Often times choosing a paint color is not about matching the color to a sofa but how a color makes you feel.  Choosing color for a home is one of the most crucial decorating decisions you will make, it can determine whether you will feel comfortable or uncomfortable in your home.

If you would like to transform your space into a home that you love again before the relatives come, call 610.955.8202 to schedule an appointment with Debbie!

Dress up your Bedroom

by Debbie Correale

blog-jan-bedroomIs it time for an updated look in your bedroom?  Spring and summer is a great time to add a fresh feel to your bedroom let’s go over some ideas!

If you moved into your home 15 years ago and your décor has not changed since that time then it is definitely time for a change!  If you are unhappy with your bedroom furniture consider a new look, check out ideas from Arhaus or Ikea.  Do you need a new mattress set but have no idea where to start looking?  Read this article titled, “How to Pick Your Perfect Mattress” from WebMd where useful information is offered to determine what you need.

Let’s review the components of your bedroom.  If you want a symmetrical look, you can go for the matching night stands and lamps; however, you don’t have to match.  For those of you that like a more natural or eclectic look, the key is balance and color.  If you like your current furniture and lamps, consider new bedding.  For ideas that you can incorporate into your bedroom, or to be inspired, review these ideas from House Beautiful.  Use the Chinese method of Feng Shui to help balance your bedroom, click here to learn how you can map out your room and add the necessary elements to create a healthy and happier environment.

Update Your Comforter:  There are many choices available in terms of types of comforters available; you will need to decide if you will purchase a down filled or fiber filled comforter.  Depending on your temperature at night will help you determine this.  Basically, down filled is better at regulating temperatures whereas fiber fill is less apt to do so.  However, if you are an allergy sufferer down filled may not be the best choice for you.  Once you have that determined, the next step is choosing a comforter.  To help you choose, click here for a comforter guide by Good Housekeeping.  I love the idea of purchasing a quality comforter with many duvet covers for a change in seasons or tastes without the large expense of replacing the whole comforter.  For some duvet cover ideas here is a list of online retailers worth checking out:

Update Your Bed Skirt:  If you have an old bed skirt that you are tired of, consider getting rid of it completely and using a fitted sheet to cover your box spring to ensure that it matches or complements your bed coverings.  Another option is to choose a simple and clean look such as this Matelassé Bed skirt or Linen Bed skirt (both from The Company Store.)

Update Your Pillows or Shams:  You can quickly transform the look of your bedroom by adding new decorative pillows to your bed.  This is a fabulous way to add a new color to your room to freshen up the look.  Check out these fun patterns and fabric options from Pier1.com.

Updating Sheets and Tips for Buying::  Everyone knows that the higher the thread count means softer, better quality sheets but be careful as the highest count may not be the best quality sheet for you as it is stiffer and does not allow air to pass through the sheet (often the stiffer versions tend to be sateen).  The general rule of thumb is to look for sheets that are at least 200 thread count or more and pay attention to the material used to make the sheets.  Here are a few helpful links to review:
