5 Home Decorating Trends this Fall

Though I adore summer and all the fun beach activities, I’ll have to admit; fall is my second favorite time of year on the east coast. A time for cozy sweaters, cuddling with my pooch and enjoying a delicious hot tea! Here is a list of 5 trends you will see this fall in home decorating:

1. Relaxed and Comfortable

More and more I find my clients looking to make their space useful, to maximize their homes to their lifestyle. I find people shying away from “formal” rooms and wanting space that have clean lines, yet relaxed and comfortable to support everyday life. Last week I focused on, How to Create a Comfortable Home, going over a few cozy decorating styles that you may want to revisit for more ideas on this topic. Consider adding floor pillows or as the Japanese use, the Zabuton.

2. Velvet

I love the soft and warm feel of velvet, the vibrant, intense colors, and variety of color. It offers a feeling of richness to any room instantly. Look for a mixture of synthetic and natural fabrics for long lasting velvet. If you don’t want to commit to a piece of furniture, add velvet pillows and throws and gain the benefit. 3. Woven textiles and Inspiration of Nature

Add a lovely tapestry, an arrangement that includes natural elements found in your area, or a piece of furniture that is hand-made. The trend is more toward artisan work and not mass produced. I know this can be expensive; however, think of adding a woven ottoman, for example:

4. Reclaimed Materials and Fabrics

Old wood, reclaimed fabrics and “retro” style prints are trending. Consider adding old wood in an area such as around your fireplace, or in a piece of furniture.

5 Quick Tips to Create a Cozy Room this Fall

fall treeCooler nights and shorter amounts of daylight means that fall is coming. What thoughts come to mind when you think of fall? Sweaters, warm tea, natural colors? The first word I think of is “cozy” because we are more apt to be spending time indoors and what’s the best way to achieve this comfort level in our home? By adding colors and accessories of the season to warm up and create a cozy environment.

Here are five quick home decorating tips to help you create a warm and cozy feel:

  1. Consider the items you already own and decide what you want to keep and what you want to replace.
  2. Pick a “pop” color or a complementary color and decide that color will be the focus color in the room. For some fall inspiration on color combinations, click here for examples from HGTV.
  3. You can mix textures and fabric types and maintain the unifying color. For example, you may choose a lovely fall orange as your cozy pop of color this autumn. You could use an orange pillow of satin and a plush throw, or a thick orange knit pillow and a chenille orange throw.
  4. Once you have chosen the color combination, you’re ready to go shopping.
  5. Pick out pillows, a throw, and candles or accessories in that color to bring together three items to create a balance in your room. The accessory could be a glass vase, a coffee table tray, or a collectible.

Fun Tip:  What’s In Style Now

Faux Fur Throw and PillowsI recently was hitting a couple of my standard go-to shopping spots for accessories and after visiting both Pier 1 and Home Goods saw many beautiful faux fur throws and pillows that would be stunning in any style. And what says cozy better than faux fur! This fall there is a lovely mix of textures combining different fabrics such as velvet or a woven knit. I’ve also seen many throw-back looks from the 70s that include fringing of all kinds and in beautiful fall shades of red and orange. They are also mixing metallics with the pillows as embellishments or beading. You will see items incorporating brushed brass or dark gray-silver.
