Dress up your Bedroom

by Debbie Correale

blog-jan-bedroomIs it time for an updated look in your bedroom?  Spring and summer is a great time to add a fresh feel to your bedroom let’s go over some ideas!

If you moved into your home 15 years ago and your décor has not changed since that time then it is definitely time for a change!  If you are unhappy with your bedroom furniture consider a new look, check out ideas from Arhaus or Ikea.  Do you need a new mattress set but have no idea where to start looking?  Read this article titled, “How to Pick Your Perfect Mattress” from WebMd where useful information is offered to determine what you need.

Let’s review the components of your bedroom.  If you want a symmetrical look, you can go for the matching night stands and lamps; however, you don’t have to match.  For those of you that like a more natural or eclectic look, the key is balance and color.  If you like your current furniture and lamps, consider new bedding.  For ideas that you can incorporate into your bedroom, or to be inspired, review these ideas from House Beautiful.  Use the Chinese method of Feng Shui to help balance your bedroom, click here to learn how you can map out your room and add the necessary elements to create a healthy and happier environment.

Update Your Comforter:  There are many choices available in terms of types of comforters available; you will need to decide if you will purchase a down filled or fiber filled comforter.  Depending on your temperature at night will help you determine this.  Basically, down filled is better at regulating temperatures whereas fiber fill is less apt to do so.  However, if you are an allergy sufferer down filled may not be the best choice for you.  Once you have that determined, the next step is choosing a comforter.  To help you choose, click here for a comforter guide by Good Housekeeping.  I love the idea of purchasing a quality comforter with many duvet covers for a change in seasons or tastes without the large expense of replacing the whole comforter.  For some duvet cover ideas here is a list of online retailers worth checking out:

Update Your Bed Skirt:  If you have an old bed skirt that you are tired of, consider getting rid of it completely and using a fitted sheet to cover your box spring to ensure that it matches or complements your bed coverings.  Another option is to choose a simple and clean look such as this Matelassé Bed skirt or Linen Bed skirt (both from The Company Store.)

Update Your Pillows or Shams:  You can quickly transform the look of your bedroom by adding new decorative pillows to your bed.  This is a fabulous way to add a new color to your room to freshen up the look.  Check out these fun patterns and fabric options from Pier1.com.

Updating Sheets and Tips for Buying::  Everyone knows that the higher the thread count means softer, better quality sheets but be careful as the highest count may not be the best quality sheet for you as it is stiffer and does not allow air to pass through the sheet (often the stiffer versions tend to be sateen).  The general rule of thumb is to look for sheets that are at least 200 thread count or more and pay attention to the material used to make the sheets.  Here are a few helpful links to review:

Mantels and Fireplace Surround-How To

11D

Mantels and fireplaces are usually the main focal point in a room and the starting point in a room design.  I have found newly constructed homes have a simple fireplace with a simple mantel.  If you have always wanted a fireplace with surround, it’s not that difficult to achieve the look you desire.  Let’s go over some ideas!

Picking a Look
What type of look are you going for with your mantel and fireplace?  Since this choice dictates the style of the room, this is an important decision.  To pick out a new fireplace, check Pinterest or Houzz for ideas, you will be amazed at the different choices.  If you did not want to use new materials, perhaps looking for something with a “historic” value, here are a few options to review – click on the link to find out more:

If you wish to add a stone look to your fireplace, you won’t believe the new materials that are available.  Real Stone Systems offers a thin, lightweight real stone veneer that is easy to install with little waste.  The veneer comes in panels for easy installation, click here to review the options available.  They also have a tool where you can upload a photo of your fireplace to visualize what it would look like with their stone, click here to give it a try.

Home improvement stores, such as Lowes, carry a line of real stone veneer called Ledge Stone, to give you an idea of the installation involved, click here.  Another less expensive idea is to use faux panels, and there are many looks available, click here to view those options from Texture Plus.

Decorating Your Mantel
Once you have the mantel and fireplace of your dreams installed the decorating fun begins!  When thinking about your mantel decor, consider placing your accessories at varying heights to create flow and movement with your eyes.  Create interest by layering accessories, adding unexpected color and textures; such as, shiny bottles, dull plants, woven baskets, metal statues and soft pillow to the hearth.  To view some ideas on decorating your mantel, go to my Houzz Idea Book on Mantels and Fireplaces.

The Details of Home Buying

This is my last post in February dealing with understanding the real estate transaction and picking a mover in my series of “Home Buying Tips in 2013.”  I hope that you have found these helpful and wish you best in your house-hunting pursuit!

Real Estate Transaction – The Details
In doing research for this article, I found some great information and decided to list all of resources here for you to read.

You Found a House – How to Find a Mover
You’ve found a house and now you need to find a mover…what’s the next step?  The obvious answer is to Google movers in your area.  Go to ProtectYourMove.gov which offers a great moving check list and will also tell you if a mover is licensed for interstate moving.  To view if an interstate mover has had any complaints filed against them, click here.

According to Liz Facenda, from RE/MAX PREFERRED REALTORS in West Chester, PA,

“After getting an executed agreement on your home that you are selling or purchasing, it is important to contact moving companies, as most settlements take place near the end of the month and they are generally very busy.  Get at least 3 quotes from reputable movers, check the BBB to make sure there are no complaints and ask for referrals from your realtor, friends and family.” lizfacenda

Here are some tips from the US Department of Transportation on choosing a reputable mover, click here for the full report:

  1. Get a written estimate from several movers.
  2. Make sure the mover has insurance and is licensed by the proper authority.
  3. Remember your priorities when choosing a mover.
  4. Do your homework.

Wishing for a seaside vacation? Bring the sea home!

Wishing you owned that cute little cape? Until that dream comes true, why not create your own version of the “dream” in your home! Create that seaside getaway by bringing the beach into your redesign this summer!

Here are some quick and inexpensive ways to achieve this!

First, choose a room where you want this “seaside” feel to reside…

Secondly, think about the beautiful blue sea, the natural colors of sand, baskets and pebbles. Think of the green colors in the ocean and palm trees. Create the palette of colors that remind you of the beach and memories from your past that bring you joy. These  colors will be the palette in which you build your room.

Thirdly, start accessorizing and having fun. The room needs to reflect YOU! What you
like and what you want to be surrounded by. Frame a picture of your favorite get away!
If you wish to create an “antiqued” look to your artwork click here for a great way to age
it using coffee! I have also found that rubbing a small amount of dark stain over the print
will quickly give it a nice “aged” look as well. (First practice on something first to make
sure you like the look!!). If you want to add a rope mirror to your design as one of your
wall hangings, I just found a fun article by Nate Berkus on how to make one yourself!

Click here if you’re feeling ambitious!

Also don’t forget to bring some real seaside elements into your design! Beautiful sea-shells, driftwood and coral are great accessories to decorate with. And you can find driftwood and sea shells on the beach which makes them a very affordable accessory! If you cannot find coral on the beach you can now purchase faux sea coral. Check these out. Right now lanterns are very popular in all styles of design. These beautiful hurricane lanterns can be a wonderful focal point on your coffee table. Add a beautiful sea color candle will top the look off! Be sure in your design to add lots of natural textures, such as a sisal rug, baskets and tall sea grass. Most importantly have fun with this – make your space special and sea worthy for you!
